I recently was given a desktop computer. The system includes the following specs.

1. 8 Gb RAM
2. i7 3.6ghz cpu
3. 2TB HDDD
And a motherboard with a Pcie3 slot.

I once built a gaming computer about 4 years ago and knew every component that I purchased and assembled. My question now is, would i be able to just add on any gaming quality GPU and have good performance or do I need "built for gaming" hardware instead of these item that my current PC came with?

Thank you for the help!

Solution
As long as your power supply will support it, you can add any GPU.
You will need a min 500W but 650W is better.

To get a balanced system you should look to a 1070GPU (or better). If you have the budget add a new SSD and another 8GB or RAM.

Thanks a lot, i was thinking about investing more into a GPU since i saved so much on getting the rest of the PC for free. It probably seemed like a dumb question but i switched to console for a few years and the PC hardware world moves very fast. So when i came back i am certainly lost haha. I will take that into consideration when i purchase tommorow. Thanks again!
