Are you planning to overclock? If you are i would suggest getting an intel i5 4690k. And for your hard drive i would suggest getting a WD blue 1tb hard drive, cause seagate has a higher failure rate of drives compared to WD.

I wasn't planning to overclock because i always was afraid it would shorten the life of the components. Is this true?

it can if you dont properly cool your components. Just watch some videos on how to overclock and they will all give you the same idea. Just take slow and bump uo your core clocks and voltage untill its completely stable by stress testing it for at least 12 hours.
