Gaming computer for college

After years of console gaming, I'm currently in the process of shopping for my first gaming computer. However I'll be leaving for college in a year leaving me with a conundrum - whether to get a gaming laptop or desktop. I understand that you pay extra for mobility on gaming laptops and they have less bang for your buck than a gaming desktop. However I'm not amazingly tech savvy (my father will help me build a desktop if that's what I choose so hopefully I would learn), thus I fear having to disassemble and reassemble the desktop at college (I won't be able to transport it any other way). Thus I would like to hear the communities experience and advice about what type of gaming computer is best for my situation.
