Gaming computer upgrades/technical issues

Hi, I recently bought an I7-6700k processor to replace my I-G860. Problem is it doesn't fit into my P8Z77-VLK motherboard. I also have a HD7870 graphics card. I'm trying to fix an issue where occasionally games will just hard stop and I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL the program to close it. No error message or anything. I also get pretty hard framerate lag latelyrics even tho I have all my graphic settings set to low during games. My question is, do I need to upgrade my graphics card or processor. I have to return my 6700k so I figured id get more info just to be safe

You need to check your CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming and see if you have thermal issues. Next, make sure all your drivers are up to date

My drivers are all up to date and my computer runs at 40°C while gaming

I also run at about 20-35fps lately, which seems drastically low for running on low graphics settings
