Question Gaming CPU question

i'm not planning on building a gaming pc since i have one but i have this question: How do i know a cpu is good for gaming? How many cores and threads and ghz does it need?

Okay, i kinda get it so if i were to choose between these 2 cpu's (Intel i5-8600k and the Intel i7-7700) (Not going to overclock)
I would choose the i7-7000 because clock speed is more important than the cores?
Am i right?

i5-8600k is better.
But there's no reason to consider i7-7700, unless it's dirt cheap. i7-8700 should be the choice instead.
