Gaming FPS varies on boot.

Hello everyone,

Recently when I boot up my system my fps seems to be "locked" randomly. An example is when This morning I booted and my fps in Guild Wars 2 on High was ~30-40 and my fps on Far Cry 4 on medium was ~30 on high with stuttering. I rebooted once to no avail and then again when it worked. My fps was then (with v sync enabled on both) 60 fps on Guild Wars 2 on high and 60 fps on Far Cry 4 on medium. When My system is performing well the GPU runs at about 50% usage. When it struggles it is at 100% usage (information from msi AfterBurner). The CPU never really exceeds 40% usage, but I realize this could be because the games don't utilize more than one core. My temperature on my CPU does not exceed 57° c and my GPU does not exceed 71° c (information from HWMonitor).

Here are my system's stats:

  • CPU: Intel 4790k quad core (installed ~4 months ago)
GPU: Gigabyte NVIDEA Geforce GTX 770 4gb (installed ~1 year ago)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 (16 gigs 4x4 setup) (installed ~3.5 years ago)
Mother Board: ASUS Z97-A (installed ~4 months ago)
Power Supply: Corsair tx 750W (installed ~3.5 years ago)
Cooling: 6 fans controlling air push/pull with water cooling on CPU
    OS: Windows 8.1

I only noticed this problem within the last few weeks, primarily because I usually only play League of Legends, which doesn't seem to tax my system enough to really have an impact on the fps.

Feel free to request additional information.

I am using HWMonitor. The temps actually go slightly higher that 50 c, I just checked and it looks like they max more around 57 c.

I just thought that your PC starts off cool - and so runs better - then warms up.

You CPU should be 40C max on idle and 60C max while gaming.

Next - check 12v, 5v and 3.3v readings - while at idle then while gaming. Post the results. Maybe your PSU is slacking off when it warms up.

The issue is not that the computer has to warm up to reach full efficiency. It is that the computer will sometimes run at 100% and sometimes run at 50% depending on some random factor when booting. It could work perfectly when booted or require several boots to to work properly.

I'm no expert but I don't believe that the temperature is the problem here. None of my components exceed their listed max temperature. The problem is the instability of performance upon boot.

Caused by?

Usually temps or voltages. That's what I was looking at. But clearly you have more expertise. Good luck!

Okay, I may be confused on this one. Here are the reading I'm getting for my MB's rails.

Idle:
5V: 5.120V
3.3V: 3.392V
12V: 12.288V

Under load:
5V: 5.120V
3.3V: 3.360V
12V: 12.096V
