Ok so I was wondering what laptops could handle light to medium gaming such as minecraft and other games of that nature with a budget $850 USD?

Solution
If you want better answers, you should probably define "other games". As stated before, minecraft is not a very demanding game. It terms of Minecraft, most 3rd and 4th gen i7 laptops will be able to run at an acceptable frame rate using normal render distance and fast textures. If you want to have a further render distance, texture improvements, and other various graphical options, you may want to look into getting a laptop with a discrete graphics card. The lenovo y500 is a fantastic choice, albeit a bit out of your original price range. Last year's model with the 3rd gen i7 with 650m as well as this years 4th gen i7 with 750m will both run minecraft very well. Just as a real world example, a relative of mine recently picked up an Asus...
A $300 computer can handle Minecraft just fine. Going $800 to play Minecraft is just plain unnecessary. If you will be playing other games, then you may be stuck; not many laptops for <$800 can play any game super well, as they all have either iGPUs or terrible dedicated GPUs. You'd be MUCH better off with a desktop, if that is possible.

Well I need a laptop for a school and I just want to be able to run minecraft on high settings and far render distance what do you think about the Lenovo y500?

Just as a real world example, a relative of mine recently picked up an Asus laptop running a 3rd gen i7-3630qm with integrated HD 4000 graphics. With a little tweaking using the Minecraft mod "Optifine", the game runs at a solid 80-90 fps.

Try some of these videos to get a feel of how the Y500 runs Minecraft:
