Gaming Monitor - 120Hz, IPS, LED, ahh!

Hi all, I always try to do my research, have read of bunch of threads here and elsewhere, but still aren't sure which route to go. I am interested in a high quality, high performance monitor to be used primarily for gaming.

Price range: $350 max, but would also love to save $100 off that
Processor: Intel Core i7-930
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6990
RAM: 12GB 1333 MHz
Monitor viewing distance: ~18 inches
Monitor size: Size doesn't matter, 24" max

I've looked at:

Lots of people seem to like it. I understand 120Hz gives a higher frame rate if your GPU can push it, smooth motion?

Only $188 for an IPS, holy crap! That's good right?

Is the response time too slow on any of my picks? Would welcome better suggestions. Any recommendations, comments, explanations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you have SLI/CF or a very good gfx card (like the 6990) ..that can pump 60+ FPS get a 120hz. if not, probably get a IPS.

Best 120hz Monitor: Samsung S23A750D (glossy screen)...as long as you have a displayport is the best 120hz monitor imo. $399 online tho. FYI - version 950D can use dual DVI but cost a little more..I like the look and stand of the 750D better tho.

If you wanna save a $100 Asus VG236HE (glossy screen) is nice...$290 AR. Colors aren't as good as samsung...but it's probably #2 on my list. If you like matted screen check out Planar 2311...best 120hz matted monitor.

FYI - the S23A750D viewing angles and colors are actually quite good...even compared to a decent IPS. S23A750D is the closest monitor to have the best of both worlds imo. I wish the 120hz came in 24" or 25" size..with 16:10 ratios...the one thing I don't like about TN panels...is the 16:9..even if its considered the standard to gaming.

As for IPS...there are quite a few good ones for $300+. The ones I know of are HP z24w and Dell u2410 ..but I know there are newer ones out now that might be better (research it). Also a lot of IPSs are 16:10 ratio...which i like better than 16:9.

FYI - I own both S23A750D and zr24w (dual screen). The zr24w is 24" and 16:10 (higher resolution, perfect size, length, height)...which I like a lot better than the 23" 16:9 on the Samsung (seems a little squished next to my zr24w)...my IPS is better for work use and general PC usage. It's easier on the eyes and and I have more real estate. However, the S23A750D is better for gaming for sure. For work and just normal usage...I think the zr24w (or IPS in general) have the edge...for gaming...the 120hz Samsung does. Both panels look sharp...1080p on 23" (Samsung) is great..so is 1200p on 24" (HP)...tho like i said..i favor a screen size and aspect ratio on the HP.

Ideally I wish I could have a 24" 16:10 120hz A750D...or a 120hz IPS...but if I had to pick one now...it would be hard...I think I would lean toward the S23A750D (just more the screen closer to your face)...but if I didn't game as much (or had a weaker pc)..probably the zr24w IPS.

BTW - IPS monitors are actually quite good for gaming now (some have very good response times/low lag)...even better than many TN 60hz monitor....it's just that..IPS can't do 120hz, which does making gaming as smooth as 120hz.. =/

Anyways, both 120hz TN and 60hz IPS are slowing starting to meet at the middle...as of right now i think the 120hz Samsung does it the best...with great colors and good viewing angles. It also generates less heat and is a lot thinner than my IPS.

It doesn't matter... Get a 120Hz monitor; you will be blown away! Mine just came in the mail today, and I love it! I went from 1080p (Asus V228H 21.5 in.) to 1680x1050 (120Hz Viewsonic $210). I don't mind the drop in resolution; the 120Hz monitor looks a lot better. I haven't played any games yet, but I'm going to see how much of a difference it makes!
