Gaming Monitor - HDMI -vs- DVI-D dealing w/ 144hz or 120hz Refresh Rates

Picked up a ASUS VG248QE Gaming Monitor. Wanted to use this will my Xbox One as well.

Xbox One is just running HDMI output. Trying to get 144hz or 120hz, chart says that this only works with DVI-D. If I were to use a HDMI to DVI-D adapter would I be able to get the 144hz or 120hz refresh rate? Would HDMI on 1 end stop this? (Not sure is it matters but Xbox One ship with HDMI cable that works with 4k as well)

If the adapter will work then what is the best brand of adapters to use for high quality?

you wouldnt be able to use the adapter with xbox-one due to the coding of the hdmi port. Must be hdmi to hdmi unless you buy a special adapter, and to my knowledge these are very hit and miss. Using hdmi you will be able to make use of the 120hz, but at the same time, the xbox one only runs at 60 fps, and for a gaming monitor, it won't make use of anything more than 60hz.

The only reason 120hz is good for consoles is for tv applications where the refresh rate is smoothed out (makes things look more fluid)

HDMI versions up to 1.2 support the same data throughput as single link DVI-D.
A HDMI to DVI or DVI to HDMI adapter is converting to or from single link DVI-D, as the video signal for these two is identical and it is just the adapter that is required (HDMI can carry audio, but this is lost with an adapter).
This is sufficient for 1920x1080 (or 1080p) at 60Hz.

The monitor requires dual link DVI-D or display port for 120 Hz or 144 Hz.
These standards include support for higher resolutions and refresh rates.
Technically HDMI 1.3 or higher has the bandwidth required, but I'm not sure that refresh rates over 75 Hz are part of the HDMI standard.
HDMI 1.4 does support 4K signals at 30 Hz.
HDMI 2.0 supports 4K signals at 60 Hz, although this is very new and not yet implemented in any device I have seen.

I haven't seen any HDMI to DVI adapter claiming to support more than 1080p at 60 Hz.
Note that while the adapter may claim to be dual link DVI, this could just be that the plug as the dual link pins.
These can be connected to DVI-D or DVI-I connectors on your graphics card or monitor.

The Xbox was designed to connect to a TV and these don't support refresh rates over 60 Hz.
Just use a HDMI to HDMI cable to connect your Xbox to the monitor. This will give you 1080p at 60 Hz.

Wrong. HDMI can only output 60hz at 1080p.
To get 100hz+ you need DVI-D or DisplayPort.

These answers are driving me insane. The reason you would want a 120hz or a 144hz refresh rate is to be consistant with your fps which would create a smother image. Xbox will never make a game that goes over 60fps and 90% of xbox 1 games will never go over 30fps. Don't buy a 144hz gaming monitor for a console. It's a HUGE waste of money.

Not sure why you would want to play on a 120hz monitor since xbox one or ps4 struggle to even get 60fps in less intensive games and in more intensive game they don't go over 30fps for exemple "destiny" is 30 fps, ps4 as the highest resolution between both console at 900p that they upscale to 1080p, its sad really. And on top of that there is no D-DVI plug in the back of the console. Honestly if you want to game at 120hz/120fps+, you simply need a decent PC because you wont see the benefit of high refresh rate if you can't match your frame per second the to refresh rate. =P

While most, including that monitor, cannot achieve 120hz through HDMI, there are some rare exceptions that are starting to show up more. HDMI 2.0 does support 120hz at 1080. That also means you'd need an HDMI 2.0 compliant monitor and GPU.

The maximum pixel clock rate for HDMI 1.0 was 165 MHz, which was sufficient to allow 1080p and WUXGA (1920×1200) at 60 Hz. HDMI 1.3 increased that to 340 MHz, which allows for higher resolution (such as WQXGA, 2560×1600) across a single digital link, HDMI 1.3 can achieve 120hz @ 1080p and HDMI 2.0 can do 4K @ 60hz

Best is to just go with DisplayPort whenever possible, it can do 240hz @ 1080p

When it comes to brands the only thing that matters is whether it's HDMI 1.0, HDMI 1.1, HDMI 1.2, etc.

an HDMI 1.3 cable that costs $20 is going to be just as good as an HDMI 1.3 cable that costs $80, even if the fancy one has gold contacts, the reason is that HDMI cables send data in packets, so either the signal gets there, or it doesn't.

That depends on the game, but the point was that 60 FPS is the max it can output.

I use an HDMI-DVI adapter block with my BenQ monitor for PS4 and XB1.. Xbox One and PS4 are capped at 60Hz so anything above that is irrelevant, in regards to gaming consoles..

like 1min of googling tells u that HMDI is for 60Hz, everything above 120-144 u need DP or DVI

My tv box sends only images in 30 fps or rarely 60, still a 120 hz tv is much smoother than a 60 hz one regardless of the low fps video so I believe your statement is incorrect

These are 2 very different answers, and neither are entirely right.

In the past, HDMI was limited to 60hz, unless overclocked, but HDMI 2.0 has been released, and is being used on newer devices. HDMI 2.0 support 120hz.

What you are talking about is interpolation, where TV's will create added frames and add them to the standard 30hz/24hz content. While this can make TV content look smoother and better, this is terrible for gaming due to the input latency issues that go with it. When watching a movie, latency has no effect, but games are interactive, so this is pretty terrible for gaming. Most TV's of this nature have a gaming mode which turns it off. You may find some HDMI 2.0 versions now, which will allow for you to use 120hz in gaming as well.
