Gaming pc build (Help me choose the parts)

Hi guys,

I am planning to build my own desktop since my old laptop is starting to fall apart. (I am in Canada)

It will be use mainly for gaming and browsing (no rendering or video editing)

Budget is at $1500 - Just for the parts only, and another $500 for the OS, and monitor (I do not need keyboard and mouse)

I will hopefully purchase the parts by the end of this month ( due to Black Friday) or whenever I see a good deal somewhere.

Here is the specs that I want

Motherboard: I would like it to be either from ASUS or Gigabyte (preferably ASUS)


CPU: is the i5 4670k decent enough ??

CPU Fan:

Desktop case - Corsair Carbide Series 200R Black Steel / Plastic compact ATX Mid Tower Case (Is this all right in terms of ventilation ?)


Memory: 8GB or 16GB ?

GPU: Really considering the GTX 770 (2Gb or 4Gb ??) I prefer Nvidia brand if possible since I am more familiar with that one.

Power Supply:

SSD: one of those 256 Samsung one I think. I mainly use my external drive to store data

HDD: 500GB +-



Monitor: Any good monitor for gaming ?

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (Will install it myself)

Hi many thanks for the respond.

As I am really not familiar with the hardware market and I based my brand preference solely based on friends who are more experience than me, I was told to avoid Asrock and MSI brand when it comes to motherboard. ASUS being the best brand with Gigabyte coming second. With that, Is it possible if you change the motherboard to something that will be compatible that is ASUS brand perhaps ?

the same goes to the Gpu if possible.

There is NOTHING wrong with MSI or ASRock. That is purely people having favorite brands. This is your friends trying to sound like they know what they are talking about. None of what they said about brands is true.

That MSI 770 is one of THE BEST 770s on the market right now. I would take it over any other one.

I'd go with Asus for the mobo, might want to look at the Gryphon, Pro or Hero....I'm with the folks saying don't touch MSI mobos - I (and most of the builders and It folks I know) refuse to build on them due to their poor QC, I get more mobo problem calls on MSI than any 2 other mobo brands put together (and remember I don't build on them, so these are all referral calls). Also for the Z87/Haswells, Asus seems to have the best handle on them
