What are the specs of the rest of the computer? I think dollar for dollar the 970 is an excellent choice. However, there is no denying the 980 is king when it comes to single GPU performance (not to mention power efficency).

GTX 980 is 15 % better performer than GTX 970 but for that much performance you have to pay almost double the price so as per price performance ratio the GTX 970 is better.
