I've just been offered Windows 8.1 and a 9800 gtx graphics card for free and I'm trying to build a gaming pc. I need some ideas for a good CPU, PSU, RAM, MOBO, case, and probably a cooling unit of some sort. I have an old optical drive I can use from my old pc but other than than what would you guys suggest? I need something UNDER $300. Not a penny more, this is also not including rebates. Because in the end it will still cost more than $300 if there are rebates.
Thanks in advance!

You will want a second 4GB stick and a new GPU at some point soon.

*EXCLUDING* mail in rebates. Your build may say $300 final price but it's still $350 that id have to spend. And as for the negative nancys, go away. Lol. I need a pc for gaming *and* for general browsing, etc. I don't need some high end system that will play C.O.D Ghost on ultra settings. I need something that will play games like league of legends, minecraft, and multiple steam games at med settings at 60+fps. Please help me out guys. I already have the GPU and OS. I'm makin it easy on you guys! =P

It isn't about saving. It's about what I'm willing to spend. I have 200k in the bank doesn't mean I'm gonna buy a 150k car. I want to spend $300 on a pc for gaming an general purposes. I guess if you knew my current pc you might understand where I'm coming from. I'm on a dell inspiron 537s slim. 2gb ram, stock gfx, singlecore processor. It barely runs my games fast enough. And it's going on like 7 years old. Oh and it's DDR2 RAM. But it works. And it was a $400 pc including mouse, keyboard, and a 25" screen back when I got it. I'm not looking for anything crazy. Just something that I don't have to worry about raging because I have like 12fps in the middle of a game. I don't personally know a lot about building. That's why I'm here. If I didn't have an OS and gfx id be asking about a $500 build. But I do so I need the rest of it for $300.

That gpu wont do much especially on modern games. It will likely struggle even at low settings at 1080p. My dual core amd 64x2 black edition with 2gb ram and a 8800gts 512mb on the g92 chip wouldnt give me playable frame rates in bf3 even on lowest settings. You are wanting something at a price thats unrealistic with modern games even on low settings. Like everyone said if you went up to 400 or 500 you could get a much more solid group of products that would fair you well on medium settings or mix of low and medium at a playable resolution. Perhaps you should give a detailed list of games you are hoping to be able to play at the fps you are wanting to play.

Someone is giving him that GPU for free to hold him off till he can get a better one. A placeholder pretty much

Done.

Sell the 9800 on Craigslist, and go with an APU build. It will fair better in games, and later on you can add a HD7750 for Crossfire, or a better GPU like a R9-270X.

This is without rebates and combined with Windows 8 you are at $500.

Here's a suggestion:

MDXX is right. The GPU is a temporary placeholder. I know it isn't going to work wonders. And to answer a previous question, the main game I am concerned with is League of Legends. I play it on a semi-regular basis and it's almost the only game I do play. And my current PC can handle it. So I know for a fact that *any* build I go with will be better than what I have. It will work better. Currently I have constant fps lag and sometimes crashes because my computer is so outdated. Also to whoever it was, sorry I didn't mention an HDD I forgot it for some reason. So now that everyone knows, I do need an HDD as well. Preferably a 1TB but I know that's hard to do in a $300 build so smaller would be okay.

Absolutly no way your getting a pc for 300$. Id save up instead of dropping 300$ on a crappy system

And man you should quit lol. Nothing but a headache on that game!! Ragers and baddies every game lol
