Gaming PC build

Its not only about VR though, the r9 390 is much faster than gtx 970 in dx12 though no doubt. Plus you are getting 8gb of Vram instead of the 970s 3.5gb vram. http://www.overclock.net/t/1594186/various-hitman-2016-pc-directx-11-vs-directx-12-performance/20

I'm not looking at VR yet, I might later on though. How come it's cheaper that the 970 but has 8gb of ram?

Well GTX 970 was released 18 months ago, yet the prices hasn't dropped even by $5. That's Nvidia for you. The r9 390 performs as good as the gtx 970, even better in some titles and definitely better with DX12 (for reference the r9 390 is better than the 980 with DX12, better by far).

I just read a thread saying that the GTX 970 will run Crysis 3 at more fps on maxed settings that the R9 390 will. I'm not concerned about VR so I think I'll keep with the 970 :)

these are Nvidia titles with gameworks(which run run horrible on AMD hardware)and still AMD has the lead. If you look at AMD titles like the New Hitman you'll see the r9 390 outpacing even the gtx 980 by a margin, whereas the gtx 970 is around 10-15fps slower.
