Hey guys, im looking to build my first gaming pc. I had my dad (he owns a software development company) get a build for me. He has a bias against intel, and im wondering if anyone has any advice. Im open to other builds, my budget is around 2,400 AUD but i could have anything up to 3000 if itd make a big difference. On this budget i need all the parts including case, fans and all the parts. I also need a keyboard (i only have ever owned a laptop) and any other bits and pieces besides a mouse and mouse pad (i recently bought a new one). My intentions are to use it mainly for league of legends, however i also love playing games such as the last of us, until dawn, tomb raider (in terms of modern games). Mostly i love the graphics in these games, so i suppose a good monitor is a good idea.

Here are the parts my dad suggested (i left out the monitor he gave me because its a pretty ordinary one)

If gaming only, go for I5-8600k, better FPS than Ryzen. psu with the case is no good.

I just so happen to have that exact gpu and it runs every game i have come across on ultra with 144 fps with vsync on. its a good card and has good cooling. The i5 8600k i have with it and absolutely no problems if you plan to OC i recommend a good AIO water cooler. the ram your dad chose is kinda overkill you wont need 3200Mhz but not much price difference between the 3000mhz anyway. you could get 16gb of optane memory for that HDD makes it alot faster and your gonna put most of your games on that too.

Switch out your cpu for the i5 8600k add optane memory for the hdd and grab water cooler instead if you plan to OC the rest of the build is good

you do know you can buy windows 10 pro for 10 dollars? infact if you have licensed copy of windows already you can get it for free until the 31st december :)

OEM win 7 upgrade to win 10 is not transferable and $10 windows is no way legit, please stop encouraging buying those suspicious windows.

Sorry but windows 7 upgrade IS transferable as i did it myself and It is 100% legit nothing illegal about it i too stay away from illegal downloads of operating systems and i certainly wouldnt encourage it if you dont believe me thats fine i was just saying to save you some money that could otherwise be spent elsewhere.

Microsoft describes the Windows 10 free upgrade as a full version, not a trial. Contrary to these statements, Windows 10 free upgrade does have some restrictions.

If you upgraded from a retail copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1, the Windows 10 license carries the retail rights from which it was derived – can be transferred. But under Microsoft’s rules, you are only entitled to a one time transfer.
If you upgraded from an OEM Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1 license, these are licenses that come preinstalled on a new computer from a manufacturer, and then your Windows 10 license maintains the OEM rights – cannot be transferred.
If you have a full retail copy of Windows 10, you can transfer it as many times as you want.
If you performed an Easy Upgrade to the Windows 10 Pro Pack from Windows 10 Home, you can transfer it using Digital Licensing. This is possible because of the Pro Pack, while an upgrade, is a retail license attached to the Microsoft Account used to purchase it.

Looking through this i see there is no sound card. I dont know much about computers, but would i need one or does the motherboard have one build in or something.... or if your using headphones are they not nessisary

So i've looked around somewhat, and i have a better idea what i want now. (games i like to play are League of legends and games with really great graphics - last of us, until dawn, tomb raider, uncharted.... pretty games, basically). I have a budget of just over 3k but if more money could make a big difference, i'm sure i could wait a little until i get my next paycheck. Ps, this is my first build and I'm not really super tech savvy (all this information comes from some research i did last few days).

Things really want

  • 2 monitors, 1 for high color 4k gaming/movies (The size isn't super important, besides being able to display 4k in a size that makes use of 4k) and respectable frame rate (im prepared to spend on this to get a good one), the second one for a 1080p screen mainly for use in moba games like lol where i can get a higher refresh rate (the cos[/code]t of these monitors is so low to this build comparatively that having it seems fine)

    SSD and HDD drives (SSD for os and actively used games, HDD for storage), unless you can think of a better solution (i dont feel a real need to spend heaps to get a very large SSD....)

    Future proofing. possibly VR?

    A keyboard (dont have one, need one that will last a long time (mechanical?). It doesnt need glowy lights o_O unless the keyboard happens to have them...

    A headset (headphones?), just a decent one that will give me good sound quality etc.

    Wifi and/or Ethernet capable (is everything Ethernet capable?)

    OS (windows 10, assumedly 64 bit)

Things I want (subject to change)


  • Titan 1080 ti.... it looks so awesome, everyone reckons the power step up from even the 1080 is significant

    CPU uhhh one that can function and take advantage of that titan, preferably a cpu setup that can be upgraded

    Motherboard (fits the components)

    RAM 16 gb is pretty standard as i understand, more than that tends to go unused simply with games

    Power Supply something that supports the build, plus wiggle room

    Cooling based on the system (im not sure i can really guess how much cooling is required, something safe would be best)

    Speakers I'd assume any monitor at that price range has them, but if not.... (doesn't need to be really good ones, just if my headset dies or something)

    Sound card (generally they are already in the motherboard)

    Optical drive... I honestly don't know how much ill use this, but it seems good to have, and inexpensive

Things i don't need

  • A case with flashy lights (at least let me be somewhat environmentally conscious... beyond flashy lights though, anything that may be useful, considering size)

    A mouse and mouse pad (I already have a decent gaming mouse)

I'm not sure if i forgot anything, but if i did, let me know. I appreciate any advice, thoughts, and suggestions... Thanks :D
