Hello,

This is a list of parts that my nephew wants for me to build him a gaming PC. He plays fortnite, but wants to get into newer games and wants to have room to upgrade in the future. He said that he wants to get high FPS.
  1. Can I get some opinions on if this would be a good gaming PC?
  2. If I can change certain parts to bring the price down a bit?
  3. What would be a good monitor for this setup that would be cost effective?
These are amazon prices:
  • EVGA 750 N1, 750W, 2 Year Warranty, Power Supply 100-N1-0750-L1 - $62.99

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Looking at that list, I would say your nephew has done some decent research on what bits to get.... there are a couple of things worth looking at though:

1: The Gigabyte B450 Aorus M motherboard may not support the Ryzen 5 3600 cpu out of the box (looking at the Gigabyte website the motherboard must have Bios version F40 or newer installed for Ryzen 3000 series cpu's). If you want to go with this motherboard, it would be worth contacting the seller and asking them if they can make sure the bios is up to date before shipping to avoid problems. The other choice is to look for a newer motherboard that has guarenteed compatibility out of the box - the MSI B450 'Max' motherboards are all updated with Ryzen 3000 series support. Also newer chipset motherboards based on the B550 and X570 chipset will support the Ryzen 5 3600 without needing any updates.

2: Performance wise, the old HDD is going to hold some newer games back and result in fairly long loading times for the latest titles. I would suggest looking at an SSD if at all possible, you can probably get a 512gb Sata SSD for similar money, it's always a balance of capacity vs speed but I think the experience with the ssd will be much better.

In terms of money savings, there are a few options - on the cpu side you could arguably drop down to the Ryzen 3 3300X - that performs very well in current titles. The Ryzen 5 should last longer with newer games though as I can see the 4 cores / 8 threads of the 3300X becoming outdated in the not to distant future. It probably won't save very much either.

Graphics card wise, there are a few cheaper options that would still give decent performance in games - The Geforce 1650 Super is still pretty capable and costs a good bit less. If you go with a B550 or X570 series motherboard then you could also look at a Radeon RX 5500 series card (these need PCIe 4.0 support on the motherboard to get best performance so don't go with an RX 5500 card on a B450 motherboard as the older board only has PCIe 3 - the Geforce cards don't have this limit so will work fine on either).

Power supply wise- the model listed looks good but might be a bit overkill as the components listed don't need that much power (it will provide lots of headroom for future upgrades though). A decent quality 500W unit would be fine for this type of build though and might save a bit of money. Do make sure it's a decent unit - something with at least 80+ bronze certification (Gold or Platinum would be better).
