Hi guys, first time posting so apologies if I make any faux pas.

I have have a fairly high spec PC that I built and all was running fine for a couple of months. Until I messed around with some in game graphics settings (for some reason) on DayZ Standalone and I whatever I did I couldn't get the same quality back. This in turn appears to have affected my whole PC, as all games now suffer from serious lag (about 10-15fps at the best of times).

I've visited a lot of forums and tried most thing like: updating and reinstalling drivers, adjusting settings on the Nvidia control panel etc. etc. but none have solved my problem.

So I turn turn to your vastly superior knowledge and wisdom for help in my time of need.

My PC spec is;

CPU: Intel i7-4790K
Motherboard: Asus Z97 Extreme
RAM: 16GB
GPU: Geforce GTX 770
SSD: 512GB
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Thanks

Solution
this is not normal at all
and that is the exact reason for your proplem
please buy a better cooler as soon as possible
100C temp can damage the cpu over time .

also just to be sure that your cpu is hitting 100 C which is not good at all
download hwinfo64 and watch the temp
if it 100 C shut down your pc until you buy a better cpu cooler .
First thing to try..
use a tool like HWmonitor from CPUDs http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Take a note before you begin of idle and Max GPU / CPU clock rates before you begin and your temps. And other utilizations

Then run a benchmark in the background window like https://unigine.com/products/benchmarks/valley/

And see the difference, This Benchmark does seem to ignore many Nvidia settings... so if benchmark runs fine it may well be the nvidia settings.

This way you can tell if anything is being throttled.

Feel free to post pics of your results.

Thanks Spencer for the quick reply. So I did as you asked.
So here's the before:

And here's the during whilst running the benchmark.

Frame rate wasn't great during running the benchmark (between 70 & 10fps). Do these screen grabs this show anything unusual?

Hi, yes it is. I have the standard heatsink fitted. Judging by your response I'm assuming this isn't normal? Could this be causing my issues?

Thanks sosolola I'll give that a shot and let you know how I get on.

Yes your CPU is being thermal throttled.

Please get something like a 212 evo, Arctic freezer CPU cooler or pay 35 more and get a AIO watercooler.

the 4790k is one of Intel hottest chips, you cant use a stock cooler with them and play games.

Most PC shops have decent CPU coolers in stock and will fit them also.

Hi guys,

So installed the new CPU cooler, I went with the "Deepcool Assassin II" (sorry Spencer I jumped the gun before you posted). This seems to have solved the problem, core temps now between 30&50 degrees C. And I'm getting between 60&120fps whilst running the Benchmark.

Thank you both for your time and effort with this, very much appreciated.
