Gaming pc up to $1300

May 17, 2009
Hi, this is the first time I will be buying components for a computer and building it on my own.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: by end of june?don't really have a deadline. BUDGET RANGE: (I wanted it to be less than $1000 USD, but am willing to go to a max of $1300

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: (gaming, internet use, watching movies)

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: (, but I'm not set on just them. Just haven't found anyone cheaper)

PARTS PREFERENCES: by brand or type (have no preferences other than for the system to be based on the CPU Intel i7 920-that's what I have

OVERCLOCKING: No (don't think so at least..) SLI yes CROSSFIRE: Maybe (probably not..)

MONITOR RESOLUTION: (don't know enough to make an informed decision)

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: (I am pretty much an RPG fan. I am currently playing Icewind Dale II which plays on the simplest systems, but after this I plan on moving to more advanced games like Neverwinter Nights II, etc. My wife plays primarily RTS games.

I knew almost knew nothing about computers and spent the last month researching the following list. I still feel like I don't know much. I'm mostly worried about compatibility issues among the components, but am certainly willing to listen to other who have advice i.e "you can save $40 if you buy motherboard Y instead of X and they pretty much do the same thing".

thanks for looking, any comments are appreciated.

it's a bit mixed, Try basing it on an Intel core 2 Q9550 if you're ok with ddr2 or AMD 955 BE for ddr3 if you get the corresponding mobo.

this will free up some money for a better monitor and HDD.

but you'll probably want to swap the Gfx for a 4870 aswell because the amd 790 and intel chipsets for core 2 only support Crossfire for ATi not SLI for NVidia.

I would just copy the tomshardware system builder marathon $1300 PC (maybe swap the tiny case they used with the antec 900 you listed above)

The GTX 260 will fit perfectly in the 900 case I have the same thing. Running instead a GTX 275 which is the same size as the 260. I even have a 120mm side fan blowing air onto the graphics card with about an inch and a half to spare.

Get the 22" 1680 x 1050 acer monitor instead of the 20" for like $30 more. You won't regret it.
