Just moved to Singapore from the States not long ago, and I have very little idea on where to find cheap parts. Anyway, here's the components I'm thinking about putting into my gaming machine (mostly Bf2142, waiting for Bf-Bad Company 2 and Star Craft 2):

Case: Cooler Master CM 590
PSU: Cosair HX520W EPS
Motherboard: MSI K9A2 CF-F
CPU: AMD Phenom II 955
XFX GTS250 512 MB
RAM: Kingston Hyperx DDR2 800 2x2GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2
DVD: Samsung S223 DVD-RW

I've checked the MSI website to make sure that the MB works with the CPU, and believe it or not Kingston HyperX is actually cheaper than Ocz Reaper here. Anyway, I'm not quite sure if the PSU will be powerful enough (I know it'll be enough for the graphic card, but not sure about the CPU since it's new and all that), and I have to admit that this is my first ever independent build (used to build my pc with some help from a friend), and will need all the help I can get. The budget I can spare right now is about 1300 SGD, which is about 880 USD, and I calculated my cost from the links below.

It'd be great if I can get some advise. Thanks.

you need to be looking at newegg.com if you are in the states now. If you wanted you could build a decent basic i7 system for your budget, but if you decide to stick with the Amd build you can get much better parts and still come in well under your budget....let us know what you will be using the computer for and the resolutions you run, and I'm sure we can come up with some decent build ideas.

woops...sorry, i misread your first sentence....I was reading from Singapore to US. My old eyes are getting bad....still let us know uses and resolutions, and hopefully someone familiar with the Singapore discounters will steer you in the right direction

Not really sure why you want the 955 and then use it with DDR2 - 940 + DDR2 gonna save you lots of money with no performance loss really

why build a 955 and only use a gts 250? i would get a AMD 4890 and a X3 720 instead, it will cost you the same and perform better for the price in terms of gaming.

that's the problem, I am, and will most likely be stuck here in Singapore for the rest of this year (if I proceed to build this computer). The price I'd pay for the Phenom II + MB will only get me a i7 motherboard here.

so should I get DDR3 instead for the 955? I read somewhere in the forum that gaming performance is mostly effected by the max cpu speed, and 955 does have a higher speed. Like I said, it's my first unassisted build, so I might be throwing stuff in that would not work well together.

Either get the 955 with DDR3 or the 940 with DDR2, although the 955 will not give you performance increases worth the extra money - spend that on GPUs

If you really just want this for a gamer you need to concentrate on gpu performance more than anything. Figure what resolution you'll be running, then buy the best card at the best price for that resolution. The cpu is secondary to gpu in gaming. You could even get by with a decent dual core system.

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll go with the 940 with DDR2 and spend the money saved on a better GPU.

I guess the next step up for a 19" or 20" monitor would be Radeon 4870 or GTX260 right? Oh, btw, 4GB of RAM is enough correct? I'll be running Vista Ult. (have a spare key).

Anyway, I'll do a bit more research on the graphic card and come back with a new configuration for more advise. Thanks guys.
