im having the most frustrating time trying to get my pc to play games smoothly like it use to do.
im a noob at building pc's, i dont much about how pc's work, i simply knew enough to build a pc that was able to play the games i liked playing.everything was great at first, i could run any game i wanted at max settings with no frame drops at all. all games were perfectly smooth.
shit hit the fan when i slid my pc out from the desk to unplug and replace my headset.
once my new headset was plugged in, i looked at my screen and i had a message saying something like " current overclocking profile failed, F1 for set up or F2 for default vaules"
i hit F2, my pc restarted and it booted up fine, how ever, when ever i tried to play anything, the game would drop to very low fps constantly and studder very badly when walking around in a open enviorment.
i have tried everything and nothing works.
i updated my bios and all my dirivers, i reset the bios by removing the battery on my mother board, i ran the pc while in overclock mode, i even re formatted my pc several times and nothing has worked.
what else could be the cause of this?
my hard drive is really old (about 5 years old now) and its been re formatted alot, could this be the cause of the studdering?
should i buy a SSD drive?]
my pc specs

1tb HDD drive
12 gb ram DDR3
core i5 quad core processor
msi gaming motherboard
fxf 550 watt power supply
GTX 960 SSC

also, when ever i play games like street fighter 5 or mortal combat x, my pc runs those type of games perfectly, i understand that these games are not really demanding when compared to games like ark and such, how ever, i installed a few games that my pc should have no problem playing like csgo and smite, sadly, my pc will spaz out even when playing these low demanding games, it seems that the very act of moving through a 3D enviorment is whats causing the studdering.

Solution
Doesn't look like a HDD error.
Just uninstall all the Geforce drivers fron Nvidia and install the latest drivers. See if it helps.
Looks like, some how the GPU speeds (which were apparently overclocked) is reverting to lower values. May be a case of overheating too.

Check if PCIE the power pins ( 6pin GPU) are plugged firmly as well.
