Hi,

I built a gaming rig in 2014, and it is time for an upgrade. New games are coming out (eg. BFV), and I would like to add some performance to my computer. Please see below for specs.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 5
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB PC3-14900; F3-14900CL9d-8GBSR
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB SSD; MZ-7TE500BW
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 290 4GB DirectCU II Video Card x 2 - Crossfire setup, but never used due to all the issues surrounding crossfire.
Case: Antec 900
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 PS 1000W Platinum Modular Power Supply)
Fan & HS: Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO
Monitor: BenQ XL2720Z

I would like to upgrade to 1440p graphics. I play competitive FPS games, therefore frame rate is super important to me. I was thinking of upgrading my graphics cards to one card, maybe a 1080ti? Or should I reuse my crossfire R9 290s? Should I be rebuilding the entire rig, or are there some components that can be reused? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Seb

Don't spend money if you dont have to.
Why would you not try the Crossfire for now. The 1180 which will cost about $1500 will be out for October if Nvidia actually pull their finger out.

Your CPU is plenty fast enough, but if you have to spend money now then buy the 1080. Half the power used and 50%+ performance

I would like to have 120fps minimum, therefore I think I will need some upgrades. So the CPU / MB / HD are acceptable? Would a GPU upgrade, monitor and ram increase increase the performance substantially?

Depending on the game, you might not need to add RAM just yet - I'd say in the games you play, check your RAM usage and see if you're running up against the limits of your current 8GB.

But, yeah, the monitor upgrade and GPU are a good way to go. I am not sure if the 1080 will do 120fps guaranteed at 1440p - you'll have to do some digging into benchmarks to see if that's the case. If it can't, then the 1080Ti is the way to go.
