Gaming/Video Editing Rig Budget £1000

I've looked around a few sites and got tips off some friends about building a rig, however i'm very inexperienced with PC building and was just wondering what ideas people have for a good build?

The budget is £1000 ($1553.4 at current exchange rate). I'd like it to edit fast and play the majority of games on high graphics settings, no need for Cyrsis 3 on Ultra 😛

P.s On a side note Mouse, Keyboard and Monitor don't need to be included, and if anyone has detailed knowledge on motherboards, i have a Black Magic Intensity Pro that would require PCI express slots. I've heard it doesn't work with some Asus moethboards??

For gaming and video editing you'll want an i7 processor, and having the ability for it to be overclocked will increase your performance so youll want the i7 3770K. This will need a motherboard for the Z77 chipset, so a board like the ASRock extreme 4 should provide you with plenty of clout. For a powersupply id reccomend a 650W corsair modular.(allows you better cable management as the cables you dont need can be removed) RAM, now this will be important if youre video editing, id go with 16GB unless you're seriously editing, in which case go for 32GB. Id reccomend a retailer such as Corsair's vengeance model. (16gb can be picked up for around £80-£100 with some looking) you'll be wanting an SSD aswell, if you're capturing video for smooth frame rates. Something such as the samsung 840 120GB can be picked up for around £60-80. For mass storage the western digital caviar black 2TB is around £100. Graphics cards.. well something along the lines of a Nvidea 670 GTX can be picked up for around £200 with a look. A samsung DVD RW SATA drive should do you at around £15 and a case such as the zalman Z11 or bitfenix prodigy, or maybe even the coolermaster elite 430. To top it all off something like the corsair H80i would really help you reach high clocks.

Thanks very much for the help, i've been recommend the Nvidia 670 GTX by friends as well so will definitely go for that! Would just one fan be enough for the cooling i would i need anymore?

This Rig can satisfy all your needs. I didn't include a SSD as they are not needed for a gaming rig. A GTX680 is great for gaming. But if you want faster 3D and HD renders , get a GTX 580. Also If you didn't include the OS in the budget , Try to get a i7-3770 or i7-3770K. They will help in quicker rendering too. 8GB RAM is enough for Gaming and editing. Also the Merc Alpha is a good and sturdy case. It's cheap but trust me , its as good as the ones people get for 70-80 bucks , only difference is those expensive cases look better. The Merc Alpha ( The case or chassis I suggested ) has room for 7 Fans and 4 front USB ports. The stock cooler is crap. DON'T USE IT , I have given a good CPU cooler too. Also don't forget to apply the thermal compound on the CPU. If you want any help , Please tell me , I will do my best to help you.

I'm sure i could get hold of a free copy of Windows 7 from my University so that well cut costs.

From the two options, and my friends recommendations i'd think these parts in the build would be good, any suggestions for the rest or alterations to this are greatly appreciated as I'm unsure about compatibility of the parts. Storage of 2TB would be helpful as videos and video editing software can take up a large chunk of memory. I'm a little unsure about SSD's, i know they speed up booting time but not sure whether they're worth it when i've got patience, or do they really speed up video processing? Just out of interest is it worth getting a GTX 680, i know they're expensive but does it pay pff when compared to the GTX 670?

You can buy OEM windows 7 versions from ebay, from reccomended sellers. I picked up a few copies for £35 each.. so shop around before buying anything. The cooler i mentioned will be more than you need for overclocking, and it doesnt need any thermal paste! since it comes pre applied. definately get the 3770k NOT the 3770, i find it a waste to spend that much money on a CPU and not be able to overclock it, if you do get a 3770 however you will NOT need a CPU cooler. If you're planning on doing any recording i would highly reccomend an SSD, as recording on a hard drive at 60FPS in 1080P creates HUGE file writes, and HDDs just cant cope with it anymore. The 16GB of RAM is there so that you have the ability to render more, i find myself regularily hitting 6GB and i dont even edit or 3d draw.. If you're doing video editing aswell, you will probably want a large hard drive since file sizes can soon leave you needing more space, would probably reccomend 3tb if you can afford one, my friend has almost filled up 2tb. My rig will give you an amazing boot time with that SSD, fast load times for your programs that you can put on the SSD and all the games you put on it will load significantly faster than a HDD, theyre worth the investment these days. Since you're editing AND gaming, id reccomend a higher end graphics card since these do actually help siginificantly with rendering and editing speeds.

good parts yes, personally since the 680 is only just starting to be pushed from the top spot of the Nvidea graphics cards it is quite expensive for what it does, only a few months ago did titans and 690s start coming in, so personally i would go for a gtx 670. Check out the graphs and charts on google, theyll show you your value for money, you will be able to play pretty much any game you can think of on max settings with a system like this..

Don't think i'll need an Optical drive as 90% of games and software is accessible are online.

Is this build a good build? I wanted a case like Fractal that was fairly plain but still looked good 🙂

I'd agree but id reccomend a closed loop water cooler, which you can easily afford with that budget and a larger HDD if you're editing and gaming since the files take up alot of space. some people run NAS systems just to cope with their video files lol.
