Calling BS. The same was said with Kinect. They advertised it as being able to hold a skateboard in your living room and have it pop on screen. I'll wait to get excited until it actually happens.

Hololens has been a product of the xbox team (largely an extension of Kinnect, and made by that same team), and was exclusively meant for gaming until ~6-8 months ago when the new pluckey CEO saw it and decided that gaming was a bit limiting for it's usefulness.

On the other end, it is a stand-alone device that does it's own processing. It can be linked to an external device, but my understanding is that it does not need an external device (console or PC) in order to work.

I can see how it would be cool with certain types of games but with conventional games I don't think it would work out too well. Nonetheless still really excited about the possibilities of this device, with or without gaming.

TechyInAZ:
Eh, I personally would not choose holograms for gaming. Using a mouse, keyboard and something a 3d virtual reality headset is so much better.

The Hololens doesn't produce holograms. 3D models are still rendered onto a screen, not projected into an area in 3D space.

The trend is towards greater immersion. I'd drop 3 monitor setups in a heartbeat along with gaming mice and mechanical keyboards for a virtual reality headset/glove combo that could throw me into a non-pixelated, highly detailed virtual battlefield. That would be absolutely mind-blowing, especially for someone who started gaming on a 48K Sinclair ZX Spectrum. I like where gaming technology is heading.

BTW, it wasn't me who dinged down your comment.

I think the girlfriend game will be most popular with the single guys so they can see a sexy woman walk with them or walk around their home. Of course there will be a cartana, AI, conversation and nude DLC as well.

Other uses... put moving targets in your toilet and blast them with your Laser Stream!

(Can I copyright that now?)

Only the people too lazy to get out of a chair will not adapt to this. No worries. Plenty of active people out there that will like it. If it works as they say it will work, which is 30% likely as demonstrated. (My opinion)

I'm pretty interested in this; looks more like how VR should be, but I'll reserve judgement till there are some final devices (and battery life figures).

Screw gaming though, I give it 10 minutes from release before someone's adapted a porn game to work with it.

This is the future... it will compliment full-VR systems like Oculus providing a different kind of immersive experience (not better or worse). The vision Microsoft paints is compelling to techies like me... will scare the pants off of luddites... and will have many Sci-Fi authors thinking "yea... wrote that 10 years ago". The reality however is going to be FULL of challenges, to duplicate the experience in the MS video will take crazy high resolution (and comms bandwidth if the unit is wireless... 4k at least to have that wide a field of view), and if the motion tracking system isn't nearly flawless it'll result in your holograms drifting around and moving out of sync with the real world. The hardware required to do this in a portable system doesn't exist yet (need more processing power and much better power efficiency)... but I think MS has something cool here.

many of you gamers, confuse two terms, gaming and playing.Yes gaming a FPS will be better with full immersion systems (Rift and co.) or classical combo screen+keyboard+controller. But playing can be interesting also in living room, like someone mentioned C&C style game, or any other multiplayer strategic game, like Allies and Axis style, or Ruse. But thats still just gaming, lets take the playing for children, imagine to build a town in the room, like legoland, play battles (with just imagination, not game concept) with your miniature virtual soldiers, have a tea time with "living" doll, etc.
Also stuff like visualization of eshop items, imagine to have the new shoos on your living room desk or better merged over your feets...
The sky is the limit..
The near future is getting pretty exciting.
