I changed the CPU to a cheaper one, as that 100MHz wont make a difference, I added a cooler for those intensive 100% workloads, as the stock cooler isnt really enough, and I changed the GPU to a more powerful one in 1080p, but if you KNOW you ARE going to upgrade to 1440p, keep the 390.

also, this isnt in the list, but don't forget about an OS.
 


I went with the 390 because of the 3.5GB VRAM issue on the 970 just so I don't encounter any problems also a couple of people have said that the stock cooler will do fine especially with the Xeon's low heat output.
 


in that case, go for the 390, but just so you know. the 970 is faster in 1080p, and the 390 is faster in 1440p.
a CPU cooler never hurts, and its helthy for your CPU to be under a hyper 212 then under the stock cooler, and it will b much quieter. and it's only 30 bucks, so why not.
 


I looked at the GPU boss review of the R9 390 vs GTX 970 and the R9 390 seemed to have better everything other than speed. I was wondering what the speed means for GPU's (sorry I'm a noob, this is my first build).

first of all, never go to any website that compares GPUs like GPU boss. they are pure algorithems, and mean nothing,

the speed of the GPU is (obviouselly) how fast it is, that means how many fraps per seconds it can push.
higher resolution displays need more vram, as there are more pixels on the screen to store in memory, thats why the 390 would be faster, as it has double the vram.
but in 1080p, since the 970 has the faster GPU core (the chit itself), so it will be faster, as 1080p doesnt need alot of vram.
