It has a bigger screen than the M20 (3.5" versus 2.8") so I am not sure why the M20 is supposedly "better"

Hate to sound cliche, but size isn't everything! 😛 Nah, I'm kidding. I agree, 2.8 inches is disappointing, but for a lot of people, especially people new to smartphones, aesthetics is everything and the M20 is a lot prettier imo.
