Gateway failure (this is my mother-in-law's computer...
Gateway SX2865-UR348
(SX2865_H)
SNID 30301954102
Originally came with Win8, she “upgraded” to Win 10
Progressively became very slow, bogged down.
Finally, upon power on would only get a black background screen displaying:
ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.
I pulled the CMOS battery for a few minutes and put it back in.
Now, upon power on:
1st screen, black background, displays:
“Gateway
Preparing Automatic Repair”
after some time, 2nd screen, blue background displays:
“Recovery
Your PC/Device needs to ber repaired
A required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed
Error code 0xc0000185
You’ll need to use recovery tools. If you don’t have any installation media files l(ike a disc or USB device) contact your PC administrator or PC Device Manufacturer.
Press <Enter> to try again
Press <F8> for startup settings
Press <esc> for UEFI firmware settings”
<esc> brings up the BIOS Setup Utility
Main Screen displays
System BIOS:
Version P11-A1
Build Datre 09/07/2012
Processor Intel Pentium CP”U G630 @ 2.70 GHz
Core Frequency 2
Memory Size 4096 MB
Product Name SX2865
System Serial NumberDTGDPAA00530304C559200
Advanced Screen displays:
Miscellaneous
Advanced Chipset Configuration
Integrated Peripherals
PC Health Status
Miscellaneous displays
AHCI Port 1: Not Present
AHCI Port 2: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH70N
Spread Spectrum [Enabled}
Bootup Num-Lock [On]
USB Beep Message [Disabled]
So…after having loaded default settings, then save and exit Setup,
black background screen displays:
Gateway
after a moment, 2nd black background screen displays:
ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.
pressing any key except ctrl, win, alt, prscr or break just results phrase repeated one line down; the mentioned keys do nothing.
Ideas?

Solution
The obvious answer is the hard disc has failed. That would explain the progressive slowing down and the inability to detect a boot drive (to load Windows).

You could try to follow the advice of SujataMoktan in the following thread:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/windows-10-error-0xc0000185/ba7e9caa-765d-41b1-b869-6361b3396709

That should resolve some bad sectors and things. But if the hard disc has actually (physically) failed (or related components), the suggested fix won't work. Be prepared to have to replace the hard disc at the least.
