One quick question... I was considering upgrading my gateway all in one, which an Intel Pentium (R) dual core CPU (which is unbearably sluggish to my standards). to an Intel Core i5 CPU. Is it compatible with my computer?

Solution
The socket in that is a PGA478. In theory, that CPU might be changeable. Maybe.
But not to an i5 of any sort.

There are a limited number of CPU's that might fit that socket, and none of them a real increase over what you currently have.

And then you get into the BIOS and power requirements.
Will the current BIOS accept a different CPU? Maybe, maybe not.
All In One's are basically laptops in a different configuration. Not really user upgradeable.

That system is a decade old (2009). It's had a good run.
You won't be able to upgrade it to an i5... Looks like your CPU is an Intel Pentium T4300.

That's a Core 2 Duo mobile CPU and that's really old. There's not enough info about upgrading your all in one. Even though you could upgrade to a better CPU you'll still be forced to stick with a dual core from 10 years ago, so performance gains are minimal.

You should leave it as it is and upgrade to a newer platform.

What your budget ? and are you located in the us ? If you are in the US I would recommend purchasing a refurbished on eBay you can buy an 2nd gen i3 with windows 10 and 4GB (I have seen some with 8GB) for under $100 and/or for under $200 you can get an i5 2400 with 8GB. The i3 is roughly three times as fast as your current CPU, if you do go refurbished budget in money to for an SSD drive so you can clone the drive to SSD for a nice boost.
