Hello,
I would like to upgrade the processor in my Gateway DX4710-UB002A to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66 GHz processor.
Does anyine know if this CPU is compatible or is there another recommended 2.66 GHz CPU?

That's not really much of an upgrade, in fact I doubt if you'll notice any improvement whatsoever.

I'm just trying to meet the recommended requirements for some video editing software I plan on purchasing.

What I need is an educated answer to my original inquiry. Will the CPU I mentioned work well with the Gateway DX4710-UB002A or is there another CPU that would be better suited to my particular PC?

I have maxed out the memory and almost 2 GB of hard drive space installed running on Vista. Thanks.

It depends on the chipset as to what CPU will work, some chipsets that support the 65nm Quad cores may not support the 45nm Quads. What chipset is your PC using and are there any BIOS updates available?

Hopefully I'm not oversimplifying this, but is it best to go from a 65nm Quad core to another 65nm Quad core? Is it better to move up than down?

Download and run CPUz, on the mainboard tab it will tell you which chipset your motherboard has.

Intel P35/G33/G31

The P35 supports 45nm Quads although you may need a BIOS update.
