Ok so i got a new hard drive for this pc and i had to reinstall the lan friver.

The problem is my download speed dropped from 4 mb/s to 1 mb/s and i want to know how to fix this. someone plz help me

just ask if u need any specs or anything else

Solution
Check the color of the (lan) lights on the back of the pc and on the router and make sure they are both displaying the proper color for 100mb or gigabit. I suspect you are stuck in 10mb/s and will need to go into the adapter propertioes and change it.

I got it from the gateway website so it should be the right one

EDIT: I was forced to put an acer hdd into a gateway mobo but seems to work fine so far. Dunno if that could have anything to do with it but if so plz let me know

just read your edit.

it seems strange that a hard drive interferes with the lan speeds. then again it is also strange that the lan driver is ~150MB.

1. install/reinstall all of the drivers from the gateway website.
2. if problem persists, uninstall lan driver from control panel. manually 'update driver' from device manager and browse to the extracted lan driver zip. (as opposed to running setup.exe).
3. if problem persists, uninstall sata driver from control panel and manually update from device manager.

please also provide your motherboard model number which should be written in large font on the board itself or a picture of the motherboard, as the gateway 4831 comes with one of several boards.

Tried #1 no luck. How do u uninstall a driver from control panel i know how to do it in the device manager but not the control panel.

start->type in "programs and features"->find the lan driver listed here and uninstall.
start->type in "device manager"->find the lan driver under "network adapters" or "unknown devices"->properties->driver->update driver->browse my computer...->let me pick...->have disk->browse the extracted zip folders for the correct driver.

there seem to be 3 folders with drivers, so you'll have to try them until you find one that works. if it does not work at full speed try the other 2 folders in sequence.

if this fails, do the same for the sata driver.

make sure to reboot after installing/uninstalling drivers

Um i only see one main setup.exe in the folder and only the .inf files show up if i try to select the folder where the drivers are

ok is there any easier way to do this because almost all of them inf files have over 30 different drivers in them. Lol

oh and if it helps when i run autorun.exe it installs the Intel(R) 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection.

ok so i already have the best one installed and the sata driver as well. I was thinking could it be the sata cables im using be the problem. I think this could be it because im using the sata cable that came with my pc, not the ones that came with the acer hdd

matt,
the reason for uninstalling the drivers and manually selecting them is because the lan driver package appears to contain both drivers and lots of other (unnecessary) software that may be interfering with speeds. this way you install the drivers only without the bloatware.

run the installer, go to device manager to look for which driver it installed. then uninstall the driver and associated programs from the control panel, make sure it is uninstalled in device manager, and update the driver for the lan with the same version that was installed via setup.exe

the only other way of achieving the same is to disable the related startup items in msconfig and services in services.msc, but i have little experience using intel lan drivers.

If you choose to do the latter, start->type in msconfig->startup
now look under command for entries directed to the intel lan software installation folder, and disable them. hopefully that will be enough.

Solution

I'll try that when i get home. Could very well be the problem lol

i already have the best driver installed turns out so it has to be something else.
