Gateway FX 6800-01e BIOS Update from Gateway Unsupported

well i finally figured out the problem. the removable tray will not slide in far enough with the plastic grab handle attached. i installed a drive without the bay to see how far it went in. there is no way possible to get the tray in that far with the handle on. i'm pretty sure the drive was in the tray properly as i don't see any other way of inserting it. i pulled the handle off and slid the tray in, went in to the matrix console and scanned and it appeared.

i have tried 2 different drives. 1 was the original seagate drive that came with it and the other was a WD caviar SE 250GB drive. they are both the same length, as i think all drives are.

another question; i was going to install the 750GB drive as drive 2 internally but can't find another SATA power connector off the PSU. there is one going to the CD/DVD, 1 to the main HD, and 2 to the removable bays. am i missing it or are there no others?

You need to pick up a splitter at a computer shop.

Amazon.com has it or
they have this one which is cheaper and has one less connector.



 
With the removable tray, you have to make sure the metal tabs are inserted into the hard drive mount screw holes on either side and that the end of the drive with the connectors is facing away from the end with the handle. You need to bend the sides of the tray to fit the drive in.

Once you get the drive in the tray correctly, the drive should slide into place with a little bit of an extra push at the end, then fold the handle down.

If you can't lift the bay door without hitting the tray handles, then the tray/s are not inserted correctly or the drive/s are not sitting in the tray/s correctly.
 
cpuid.com has monitors that seem pretty accurate so far. I,m using cpu-z for core temps and cpuid for hardware monitoring it gives temps volts fan speeds all the useful stuff. If anyone has a better one let me know. opps almost forgot using coretemp64 for full time monitoring of my processor
 
i just have the CPUID, which doesn't give temps. i'll have to look for the CPU Z.

RW-thanks for the help. i'm having other issues now though. somehow i lost my disk manager. it is still there but when i right click computer, manage, i get a quick flash on the taskbar but nothing happens. i'll play with that some more.

i got the drive bay to work correctly. i had the tabs in front of the drive, not in the screw holes. the other problem that i'm having is that i use KD Win for wiping my drives but they don't show the removable bays. i also tried looking at them in EnCase software to wipe them but they don't show up in there either. i then went to install my FTK on here and it won't recognize my dongle. so i went in to XP mode and had the same problem there. i'll figure that one out but it's just frustrating.

the gateway is performing nicely though. with no additional fans and then running on slow, the removable bay door open, and the side panels attached, i'm only seeing about 90*F at the CPU and 118*F system.
 
If you pay attention to this and connect your drives accordingly, you will know what drive is what in the Disk Manager.

With the system laying flat on it's side so the motherboard is facing up, the SATA controller ports are as follows:

- - Left, Top Row - SATA-5 SATA-3 SATA-1 - Right, Top Row
Left, Bottom Row - SATA-6 SATA-4 SATA-2 - Right, Bottom Row

The Operating system drive (C:\Drive) should be connected to the SATA-1 port

So it should be such as this:

SATA-1 = Drive-0
SATA-2 = Drive-1
SATA-3 = Drive-2
SATA-4 = Drive-3
SATA-5 = CD-ROM 0
SATA-6 =

Say Drives 0 + 1 are in the internal bays
Drives 2 + 3 would be the Hot Swap bay

SATA-5 would be the DVD drive and SATA-6 would be what ever you might use it for whether it be
a BlueRay drive, an external drive connector or something else which connects to the SATA connector.

The Computer manager having froze up sounds like you may be having a drive issue.

Did you by any chance apply the Seagate Firmware update to the Seagate drive which
came with the system?

If so, then it's very possible the drive is periodically going into sleep mode. It seems that Seagate's
hard drive firmware update overrides the system setting for power control and puts the drive to sleep
regardless of what you have your power settings set to.

Or if you did not apply the update, there may be some other drive problem such as a failing drive unless
of course you still have some of the Gateway crap installed on your system which could be causing the
problems instead.

The drives themselves won't show up as removable unless you can get Windows to let you configure
them as removable. For some reason, Windows wants to try and configure them as permanent drives.
 
well after 2 days of getting it all set up, the HD crashed. i was on here reading RW's post and when i went to click out of it everything went blank. tried to reboot, no disk. put the original seagate drive in the front and tried again, it booted into vista just fine. pulled the HD out and installed it in the front bay, still nothing. the data is still on it so it seems like an MBR problem, possibly a rootkit. i downloaded a few apps trying to get temp readings and might have got something but AVG never picked anything up.

luckily i didn't wipe the original disk or my old comp yet (i'm back on my old one now). i'll try to figure a way to try to repair the MBR (never did it without a floppy). the drive still spins up and doesn't sound any different so i'm sure it's something that can be fixed.

well off to do some research. i'll let you know. if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

 
If it's an MBR RootKit then check out Gmer

This tool detects and repairs MBR RootKits.

There is also a tutorial on the site to show you how to use it and how to recognize a RootKit infection and how to Repair it.
 
after several unsuccessful efforts to repair the error i gave up. i installed my other 250GB WD HD that was wiped prior to loading win 7 on it. i did scan the drive with AVG and nothing showed up. i then scanned it with trend micro and 2 virus' showed up. don't remember now what they were but they don't appear to be able to cause the issues that i was having. so now i'm wiping that drive. i will then ghost my machine to put back on that drive in the event i have any further issues.

now the fun part of dealing with MS when i try to authenticate my copy of 7 after installing it a few days earlier. hope they don't give me any hassle over it.

RW-i was going to try GMER but it didn't look like i could scan an external drive and i couldn't boot into it so i gave up.

BTW-here is the message that i was getting. the HD was showing up in BIOS and was the first boot item. it booted fine with my original drive. it's fixed now but i'd like to know what caused it so that it doesn't happen again.

here is the message:

"Reboot and select a proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"
 
Not sure about that particular message as I don't recall coming across that particular one before.

The wording sounds kinda off from what I have encountered in the past.
 
here are the 2 virus' that showed up:

lsremo~1.dll hktl_pwdump
micros~1.exe crck_ngcgen

there were a few others but they pertained to forensic software i have installed. the first one listed may be due to the same software because of the pwdump. the second one i'm not sure. i have a friend that frequents bittorrents and has given me a few things so it might have came from there.

so far the new install is working fine other than occasionally when i start up after the login the screen goes black and hangs. i have to manually power down with the power button and restart. it did that with the other drive a few times also.
 
Well, if there is problems of this sort with viruses and worms, I would recommend paying a visit to the Spywareinfo Forums - Home of the Boot Camp. Check out the Malware Removal sub-forum and read the pinned topics there.

You'll want to create a new post including alogs from MalwareByte's Anti-Malware and SpyBot-Search & Destroy (without the Tea Timer) and if needed, a HiJackThis log.

These guys will be able to help you clean up any infections including anything that is hidden on your system.
 
Glad to see this thread is still up and running since acer is no help. I've been attempting to install the new driver for the i7. No matter what I seem to do it wont update past the original 2006 (6.0.6001.1800) version. I got the 9.1.0.1007 version off of gateway's site and even running the -OVERALL command isn't working. Anyone else having this issue or am I over looking something :/
 
If your system BIOS is has never been updated and is still at the original Factory BIOS of R01-A1 842P091G, then you'll need to use the update containing the /X switch.

Original Factory BIOS AMI R01-A1 842P091G

The first BIOS update was AMI R01-A4 2/11/2009 - 842P161G - released 02/26/2009

Newest BIOS is AMI R01-B0, 5/19/2009 842P181G - released 12/23/2009

The Most recent BIOS can be found in the following thread with comprehensive
instructions for updating your BIOS to the Newest BIOS.

If Your BIOS is AMI R01-A4 2/11/2009 - 842P161G or Newer - Use This
Next open Notepad and paste the following line into it:
AFUWIN.EXE 842P181G.ROM /p /b /c /REBOOT
and save as update.bat

Use the following line: AFUWIN.EXE 842P181G.ROM /p /b /x /c /REBOOT

Here is an explanation of the switches used by the Batch file.

/P - Program main BIOS image
/B - Program Boot Block
/X - Don't Check ROM ID
/C - Destroy CMOS checksum (Clear nVRAM)

In this situation, the /X switch is necessary cause Gateway (Acer) changed the Default BIOS naming convention with the release of the first BIOS update. So with the First update, it was found that the BIOS could not update due to a naming mismatch. Two weeks later, Gateway pulled the update, fixed the Batch file by adding the /X Switch, then uploaded it back to the Ftp site.

Once your BIOS has been updated, future updates no longer need the /X Switch.

Don't worry about trying to "SEE" the Flash file and as to the single line you saw in Notepad, that was from the Batch file which is used to execute the flash program and pass the command switches to it.

As to the reason you can't see the file/s, it's the same reason you most probably can't see the file extentioons. You need to configure your Folder Options so you can see file extensions, hidden files & folders and system folders. There are detailed instructions in this thread on how to set Folder Options and you can find them reposted several times, I'm sure :)

If you follow the instructions in the other thread, you should have no problems.

Not sure if you were replying to someone else warrior or maybe I wasn't clear on my question. I'm still trying to figure out this issue with the i7 driver not being updated. I read some material stating that gpedit needs to be used to disable windows auto driver install option, but unfortunately vista HP doesn't come with this option. I've tried to uninstall the driver but each time I reboot, and before I can run the update, windows jumps in and re-installs the old 2006 drivers. going to try in safe mode perhaps will have better luck. this is frustrating. stupid m$.
 
Seeing the date you mentioned, I thought you were referring to the BIOS update.

What driver are you referring to?

Are you referring to the X58 chipset driver?

If so, then what you need to do is go to the Intel website, then in the Work window (on the left) you need to select Support & Downloads then Chipsets > Desktop chipsets > Intel® X58 Express Chipset > Download Drivers and Software

The newest one will be the fourth item down, Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager 7/17/2009 - 8.​​9.​​0.​​1023
This is both 32-bit and 64-bit for Windows 7, 2003, Vista, XP and other versions.

no worries, i found it alright. is this for the i7 chipset though? I didn't see anything about the i7 in the documentation? I tried running the setup and it is stuck on "stopping service IAANTMON".. even though the service IS stopped. I have a feeling this isn't what i'm looking for. :/ ty for your quick replies btw.
 
Which FX6800 model do you have?

If yours has the X58 chipset which the first models have, then the driver I listed would be the one you would need.

Microsoft Security Essentials could interfere with both the installation/update of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Also some other Anti-Virus programs can do the same.

I recently updated mine and had to disable MS Security Essentials to do it as I ran into the same problem. But then I re-enabled it after updating.
 
I have a FX6800-01e model. After disabling my AV the install worked. BUT as you can see from this screenie, the driver is STILL stuck at 2006 I am so annoyed by this, wth. The install went smooth, it was quicker than the other version i tried. But yea, this is upsetting.
 
You've got the same system I've got.

As for the image you uploaded, it shows the same as mine. You're system should have the latest drivers installed.

It's not the processor that you would be updating, but the chipset which is the X58 and you will find this under System Devices in the Device Manager.

Microsoft and Intel work closely together and when you check all the X58 and ICH10 listings, you will see the same date as your cpu driver imageand they will all say Microsoft.

If you need details on the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, you would probably be best reading up on it at the Intel website. But remember, the driver date and the release date are not the same as there can be significant time between the two. It can be days or even weeks or months, all due to how long the testing period is.
 
Just so you know, Core i7 is the processor

X58 is the setchip

After having reread your post, I see where your confusion is happening as you are thinking of the processor as the chipset itself.

As long as the Intel Matrix Storage Manager is installed correctly and your system is working just fine, then you should have no worries as everything should be OK.

It's when you start looking at the dates of individual drivers and files that'll mess you up if you don't know what's going on.

I'm trying to find a driver update for the hard drive. Have you updated this on your machine? I'm DLing the audio driver update from gateway as we speak. Should be just about finished. This might help someone or may not, but the most recent ATI 4850 driver from ATI messed up my openGL. Textures didn't fill in like they should. So had to install this driver here and it fixed the problems of opengl. But yea, still working on finding a hard drive update for the firmware and driver. There are no driver updates for the hard drive, but there may be a firmware update for the Seagate hard drive depending on the serial number.

You need to go to the Seagate website to the download section and get the SeaTools for Windows. This will check your SeaGate drive and alert if there is a firmware update available for your drive. Follow the instructions to verify that your drive does qualify for the update and it'll let you download the new firmware.

One thing I have noticed about this firmware update is it enables mandatory power savings in the drive itself and this overrides the power settings of your system. So even if you have your system set to never let your hard drive sleep, the SeaGate drive will go to sleep when it is not being accessed which is very annoying.
