well i finally figured out the problem. the removable tray will not slide in far enough with the plastic grab handle attached. i installed a drive without the bay to see how far it went in. there is no way possible to get the tray in that far with the handle on. i'm pretty sure the drive was in the tray properly as i don't see any other way of inserting it. i pulled the handle off and slid the tray in, went in to the matrix console and scanned and it appeared.
i have tried 2 different drives. 1 was the original seagate drive that came with it and the other was a WD caviar SE 250GB drive. they are both the same length, as i think all drives are.
another question; i was going to install the 750GB drive as drive 2 internally but can't find another SATA power connector off the PSU. there is one going to the CD/DVD, 1 to the main HD, and 2 to the removable bays. am i missing it or are there no others?
