I have a Gateway SOLO2300 Laptop, and am looking to upgrade my hdd.
Was wondering if 10g is the most the Laptop can handle and it uses a
Hitachi hdd now, but will any 2.5" laptop hdd work (like Sony, tashiba,
dell, etc...)or do I have to use a universal one(like WD,Seagate,etc...)?

Thanks,
Chew

Look down about 20 posts. Someone with very similar headers as yourself just
posted the same question. The question was answered below. However, I'll
refresh my memory. It appears as per Gateways specifications on their
website for that same model is that only a 10g hard drive will work, how
they come to that conclusion though is unknown to me. Maybe they set it that
way in the bios to ensure that the original OS intended for the 2300 works
correctly? Windows 98? If it were me, I would definitely try a larger HD
20, 30 or even a 40g HD under Windows XP Home/Pro/2000, if that system will
allow anything other than Windows 98 and is properly supported with drivers
and such. I do not know how the 2300 came from Gateway configured so I am
making several guess's and assumptions. No harm can come to the HD for
trying a larger HD. The only thing that may happen is that the computer's
bios will read those larger HD's as 10g if it won't work, ie. the computer's
bios seeing the 20, 30 or 40g HD as a 10g.

Good luck to you,
Ty

I went to the site but they don't say whether or not I can use any 2.5" hdd
in the solo2300 (like Toshiba, dell,HP, etc...) or should I stick with
universal hdd's (like WD,Seagrate,Maxtor, etc...)
I'm running WinME and having no probs except disk space.

Thanx,
Chew

Maxtor doesn't make 2.5" drives - Seagate and now WD, do. Any current drive
will physically fit - you may want to stick to one of the vendors that
provides a free BIOS overlay in case you buy a drive too large for the
system BIOS - that includes WD, Seagate, Fujitsu, Hitachi and Samsung.
Toshiba doesn't have a downloadable disc manager.
