I have been having all sorts of problems with my wife's Gateway SX2370 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. After lengthy problem solving threads on other boards to rule out malware or other software issues, the best suggestion anyone had was to try updating the BIOS. In trying to do so, I've encountered a problem that others also seemed to have had yet i find no solution listed. Gateway shows two BIOS updates, P01.A3 dated 12/26/2011 and P11.A4 dated 06/11/2013. I downloaded both and installed the first one without issue. however, I'm still have the same problems with the system. Then when I tried to install the latest one, I got the following error message, "Error: ROM file size does not match existing BIOS size." I have quadruple checked to make sure these are both the right updates. I followed all the installation instructions but I still cannot get the latest update to install. Gateway offers no help unless I want to pay some ridiculous amount with no guarantee whomever I speak with, will have a clue as to an answer.

My next step to resolve the issues on this computer is to do a reformat and fresh reinstallation of Windows 7 but if there is a BIOS problem, there's not much point until that's resolve. Any help or direction would be appreciated as i know others have posted about this same issue. Thanks.

Solution
You might get better help explaining your original issue which led you to trying to update your BIOS rather than just asking why the update failed. It may not have anything to do with your BIOS.
The major issues was/is that at random interval the computer spontaneously reboots after displaying the message "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will reboot in one minute. Please save your work." Again, no software conflicts, no malware issues, no hardware issues and no corrupt files were found. Since Gateway showed two BIOS updates, that was the nest logical step to try. The first one P01.A3 went fine; however the rebooting issue still persists. Cannot get the second listed update to install. I've seen on this site, a post from someone having the identical problem with the same machine but there never was a resolution to the issue.

The other suggestion I was given was to try a reformation and fresh install of Windows 7 SP1. I'm ore than willing to go back to square one if someone is willing to talk me through all the steps, just in case someone missed something.

Thanks for the interest and help.
