Gateway Windows vista Audio help

When i plug my headphonse in to my gateway laptop....the sound doesnt go throught the headphones it still only comes out of the laptop...please help me fix this

When you plug in the headphones, it separates a contact inside the computer to disable speakers, so something is not right with the
hardware connection.
