GB 965P-DS3 &e6550 or e6750

I have a new GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) mobo. I was originally going to build with an E6600. But with the new 1333 FSB chips out (E6X50 series), I'm thinking of using the E6550 (or maybe an E6750). This board (rev.3.3) was promoted as being able to take the higher FSB chips with a BIOS update, but I haven't talked to anybody who has actually dropped one of the newer chips in that board.

Would probably be easier to either get a P35 board or use the E6600 CPU ... but the E6550 is nearly $70 cheaper than the E6600 ... and the P35 boards would be an additional $150+ Anybody have this board and have successfully dropped an E6X50 series CPU in? I don't want to have to "waste" this board.

What chip do you have in it now?
If none, I would not go for either chip.
Rather I would go for the E4500 for $125 from NewEgg.

The The 965P-DS3 has a relatively low FSB wall compared to the P35 boards. While that chip may work, you are better off with something like the E4500 or maybe a Q6600.

Both of these chips can be set to run much faster than any of the 1333FSB chips in the 965board.

@zenmaster - Yeah, the E4500 Allendale is an option I thought about, but I'm kind of focusing on the Conroe (probably the e6550, if the board will "accept" it). I don't want to spend the Q6600 money on this board. That will probably be a Nehalem chip and the appropriate board when those chipsets are out.

@Shadow7037 93 - yeah, the P35-DS3L is an option too, but I need/want to use this board with my last legit copy of XP Pro.

I'd probably think of a Nehalem chip and board with Vista, if that SP1 fixes a lot of the current issues people are having. I'm hopeing to get 1-2 years out of this build ... without having to go to the P35 boards.

The E6xxx series are not the Conroe.

You do realize that the E4500 and the E2200 will actually OC to much higher speeds and performance levels than the E6550 or E6750 on that motherboard?

The reason is that the your board will have a very tough time going very far beyond the 1333 FSB to let you push those chips to the limit.

It's not a bad board, I actually have one myself.
They will just not OC the 1333FSB chips well due to the FSB limit.

The 800FSB Chips will OC like demons.
Also, the E4500 is a very recent stepping and is quite fast and efficient.
You should be able to hit 3.4Ghz on that w/o much thought.

I doubt either of the other chips would OC that high on that board.
Even if you OC'd that Mobo to 1600Mhz, you would only be getting 3.1Ghz out of the E6750 and much less from the E6550. And I don't think that board will hit that speed so you will see even less.

If you are looking for a short-term answer, I would do the E2160 and take it to 3.4Ghz or so. Then upgrade the Mobo and Chip to thet Conroe. If it's longer term, the E4500 would be a good deal with twice the cache of the E2160s.

I was thinking of the Penryn which is coming out.

If you don't want to OC, then that is fine.
They just OC, so easily most seem to do it.

I know I have my C2D OC'd an extra 1.2Ghz and have reduced the voltage to below stock values so it runs extra cool.

The FSB wall on that board is not very low as many have stated. They "unofficially" support FSB1333 and my Gigabyte 965P-S3 has been running solid 1600 FSB for nearly a year, and it's my E6400 (8x multi, same as the E6750) that's running out of headroom; I suspect 450+ is achievable, as it was on many P965 boards. I was in the market for a new mobo when P965s were the shiz, so I am well researched in their overclocking potential.

If you're overclocking, which you should, the E6550 is not attractive due to its low multiplier. Assuming you can achieve 400FSB, which I am almost certain you can, that's only 2.8Ghz, with the plus being that temps and voltages will likely be able to remain stock. An E6750 will push 3.2Ghz at 400FSB with possible mild voltage increase.

However, if you're sticking to the dual core train and not ready to plunge on the quad, taking overclocking and price/performance into account, the E4x00 line is unbeatable. The dropped 2Mbs of cache is a small (~5%) performance hit, however, their high multis and low FSBs allow you to push them to the highest clock limit either your cooling or the chip itself will allow, typically 3.4~3.6Ghz or so with good cooling. The clock advantage overlaps the cache deficit, and the price of an E4500 + good air cooler is the same as an E6750 alone.

Edit: I have to disagree with Comp, if you go with the Quad, you should be able to go fairly higher than 3Ghz, 3.6Ghz tops though.

Actually the E6xxx series IS the Conroe, except perhaps the 6320 and 6420. The 6300 and 6400 were Conroes with half the cache disabled (released BEFORE Alendale) but were mistakenly called Alendales anyway...the 6600's etc are all Conroes, even the quad-core Kentsfields consist of two Conroe cores.
