Gear for Ranger pally?

Hi,

I'm looking for some gear suggestions for my Ranger pally. He is level 66
in NM Act5 (SP) and his main skills will be Holy Frost/Shock and Resist
Cold/Lightning. That's already 80 skill points + pre-reqs, so I should be
there at level 80 or so..

He'll get some nice bow/crossbow for ranged attacks with heavy
cold/lightning damage from HF/HS. I'm current planning with the unique
crossbow Buriza-Do Kyanon for its 100% piercing attack. Does the elemental
damage carry through or only the physical part?

Every monster that is still standing afterwards will get my Zeal or
Vengeance attack. Unique Heaven's Light scepter, SPIRIT shield and a +2
pally ammu already give +7 pally skills, so I'd have level 8 Zeal/Vengeance
attacks. Given enough space, I can throw in 3 +combat skills charms..

So, my base Hell equipment will be:

- Kira's Guardian circlet (with UM=70 res all, cannot be frozen)
- upped Skin of the Vipermagi or Que-Hegans wisdom (more def, less
res)
=> Kira's + Vipermagi = +114 res all
- pally ammu with +2 all
- SoJ or two rings with about 110 AR and some resists
- Gore Rider boots
- crafted Blood gloves (IAS, Crushing Blow, resists)

Attack rating should be taken care of by my Blessed Aim merc and resists
will be quite high (if not maxed) as well. But I wonder if a base defense
of 2K is enough for ranged attacks?
On the melee side I can switch on Holy Shield, which should easily double
my defense..

Am I right that Amp Damage, Critical Hit and Deadly Strike only work on
physical damage? Then they would be quite useless with my high cold/light
damage..

ITD only works on normal monsters, but what about some ETH runes? For
example, if I socket Witchwild String with 2 ETH, I'd get -50% target
defense? Are there any other unique bows/crossbows with 2 or more open
sockets?

Wait a minute, is this the same guy with the Dream hat?
Even a lvl 15 HS with max Resist Lightning gives ya 1-2203 Lightning, and if
you can have the HF aura on at the same time, that gives you what, an extra
700 or so? That then is ~3k Elemental dmg. Add on your 300% ED from
Fortitude, you could pretty powerful, I'd think. Or get a Might merc, and
miss sometimes :)

I'm assuming elemental would too, at least the cold dmg on the Buriza itself
gets carried with the piercing, as does Freezing Arrow.

with it, if not I'd keep the Viper.

It seems that no matter what the Def (at least IME) those big nasty Ranged
attacks that you don't want to hit you probably will 🙁. Or it could be I
just always stand in the wrong place.

Forget the Buriza- Pally's actually have to AIM unlike Zon's. You want to
go with a Demon Machine. The splash effect from fire arrow always hits, and
hits multiple targets at one time, not just one at a time like the Buriza
does in the hands of a Pally. I might have the Buriza on the switch for
sniping but the DM would be the best main attack.

hmm, I was thinking that the splash effect would only carry fire damage
and I don't have or use Holy Fire aura, only HF/HS.

Anyhow, I'll try DM once more, but I wasn't too impressed by it on my
pally. I'll switch in Razortail for 100% piercing, too.

basically yes, but I was only playing around with it (with cheated runes)
and then dropped the DREAM stuff for good. And same goes for Fortitude
armor as I've never found a LO rune (highest so far is a VEX).

I'm currently testing upped Shaftstop, String of Ears and my Harlequin
Crest giving 50% Damage reduction with maxed resists.
While doing the NM Anya quests, those Succubi and Claw Vipers were really
hurting! Funny thing is that meleeing them hurt much less than ranged
attacks?
So I hope that this Shaftstop setup will work better...

You have a funny way of saying Fortitude. Damage on mine is 98-334 giving
an attack damage of 341-1299. 300%ED from Fortitude doubles this damage.
And then put 1-2526 lightning or average 650 cold damage on it.

What is the going trade rate for buying a LO rune?

I think that's because those damn Lizards get their melee attack added into
their Ranged one somehow, or something. IIRC there is/was a bug, but don't
remember the particulars.
