GearHead, the roguelike CRPG of giant robots and randomly generated
gibberish, has just been updated. Changes in version 0.843 include:

- Several new plots, and a new Guardian story
- New images for SDL including the much-awaited hot dog cart
- Can now use enter key when attacking (gflooker.pp)
- Fixed robot construction/weapon token bug (backpack.pp)
- All personal items should now have mass (PC_Equipment.txt)
- Fixed lancemate swap over water exploit (pcaction.pp)
- Ejection on world map should now work properly (pcaction.pp)
- Unpiloted mecha no longer moved on world map (arenaplay.pp)
- Characters won't board immobile mecha (arenaplay.pp)
- Items shouldn't be deployed in water any more (locale.pp)
- Lancemates can now use SF:1 mecha (arenaplay.pp)
- Added names-above-heads mode, NAMESON config option (sdlmap.pp)
- SDL starts in windowed mode; added FULLSCREEN config op (sdlgfx.pp)
There have been a lot of problems with running the game in
fullscreen mode on Windows XP, so for the time being it
will run in a window on the desktop by default.

You can download the new release from all the usual places. As always,
GearHead is free of charge and open source.

Hi Joseph,

I can't seem to get to that site today, is there any other source, or would
anybody reading the group be willing to host, email it to me? - If
emailing, be sure to 'fix' my email address.

Thanks!

Cool! I guess I'll hold off more suggestions/bug reports until I try
the latest version. You never responded to the post I made about
GearHead and H-World in the same post, however. Did you see it?

Well, one comment I will make: should I only be seeing one mecha in
the "destroy all but the leader, so he can surrender without losing
face" mission type? I've been able to complete it by slapping the
leader, but sometimes even an arm will take out the whole mech (even
when called shot is used to attack a limb). Seems like the description
implies more mecha should be present. Also, when encountering
"bandits" there is only one (so just "bandit") and there is a serious
lack of variety in bandit vehicles. One problem I have is that it's
hard to build up player skill in that you have easy fights like lone
bandits and some really hard fights against certain NPCs, but little
in the way of middle ground, outside the arenas, which are a limited
choice and seem to increase sharply in danger level at points as well.

>- Several new plots, and a new Guardian story

Also cool.

>- Can now use enter key when attacking (gflooker.pp)

I'm not sure I understand what this means?

And a gameplay advice question: What's your preferred mecha of each
type and why? (I really loved my Nova Storm Buru Buru -- can't beat it
for cool, but it doesn't stand up to the heavy stuff. *sigh*)

Is the learning curve still pretty high? I'm talking about learning what
you're supposed to be doing.

Sorry, I missed that one.

This was a bug. It has been fixed for the next release.

This is a problem I've been working on since the early days of
GearHead. The way combat difficulcy works is that the game keeps a
record of PC successes vs. failures. As the PC has more successes, the
difficulcy level goes up. Failures decrease it. So, the difficulcy
level tends to naturally follow the PC's (and player's) abilities. One
problem is that the system doesn't work so well at the very beginning
of the game.

I don't know how much of a problem this is. On the one hand, it makes
starting the game more difficult. On the other hand, it makes things
far more rewarding later on when your PC is defeating scores of
enemies at a time and being offered missions from everyone. Also, at
the beginning of the game, different PCs may have very different
abilities. Some may be concentrating on their close combat abilities,
others on mecha skills, and so on. The game starts out at the easiest
level until the character proves his abilities.

Here's a few suggestions for getting XP at the start. Learn some
personal combat skills and head for the dungeons. You can gain combat
XP there much more quickly than you can from just mecha fighting, at
least at the start. Use the arenas to boost your reputation. That way,
you'll get better encounters in missions and on the world map. Learn a
skill that can give you XP or credits for little or no risk- Mysticism
can be used on shrines, Science can be used on experiments, and
Performance can be used in towns. Check the news for towns where
there's military action going on. Go there and you should get lots of
mecha missions; as long as you say you're volunteering, you should
always be able to take the missions. This will improve your
reputation.

Before you had to press the space bar to confirm an attack; now enter
works as well.

My favorite mecha at the very beginning of the game is the BuruBuru.
It has better armor and weapons than most starting mecha, and its
light beamgun is effective for shooting small enemies. Unfortunately,
its poor maneuverability means that it doesn't stay useful for too
long.

For the middle of the game most people like the Fenris. It's very
maneuverable and extremely well armed. Plus, it's cool to be running
around in a mechanical T-Rex biting through enemy mecha in one chomp.
I personally like the Kojedo. It's a fun sniper, especially if your
character has Stealth.

My favorite mecha overall is the Vadel. I have no real reason for
this... it's just a fun mecha to use. If you upgrade its pistol and
sword to something a bit more powerful it's quite possible to finish
the game in a Vadel. It's probably easier to finish the game in either
a Savin or Zerosaiko, though.

Nearly every mecha in the game was created for a specific character
I've used while playtesting, and has been outfitted for a particular
fighting style.

Hey Mate

Excellent game, great playability, some headaches and hair pulling:}.
I can buy clips for weapons that aren't offered, If I wait to buy them
they disappear and then sometimes the guns appear later
on..grrrr..hate that..at least I have 2 clips of wrist rockets
clips:}, and a clip for the quad grenade launcher. Ih yeah
shields?..they don't seem to show up once you've equipped them? are
they any use (still learning to read the graphical interfance on
character status) If they are still their, way to add DC (?) anyone
have a faq on the different stuff used in here, items etc..that would
really be helpful..also making money..umm..help..yes it is cheap to
repair stuff, but it dows add up..and mecha fighting only gives so
much..I usually end up using almost half what I win to repair and
replensih my mecha.

Anyway, I wont be giving this game up..its very playable and fun.
