GeForce 256 vs GeForce II MX400

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I really don't know. I have an Elsa Erazor x2 (GeForce 256) and I'm wondering if there's any advantage to replacing that with a GeForce2 MX400. I'm not entertaining a regular GeForce2 because of price. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

If you have a SDR Version of the Geforce by all means upgrade. The Faster Memory and Core of the new card would be better. Now if you have a DDR flavor of the geforce then I would just stick with that. It has 4 memory pipes rather than 2 and faster memory. Plus 128-Bit Memory bus all the way through.

"Intel and Microsoft can we say monoply?"

Stay with GF256. If you're gonna ungrade go to GF2/gts/pro,
it's the best price performance. I have installed some MX cards and they r good...but for an extra 40 bucks the performance you'll get from the GF2 pro will be worth it.

My friend has 3d prophet (geforce256 SDR). He can't play quake well in 32 bit. A geforce 2 MX wouldn't be that much better.

Sh!t Happens.

Ahh...SDR chokes on 32bit color aye? Asus DDR rocks then, because I bought 2 of them and 32bit color is no prob on all my games from quake to landwarrior to superbike2001.

And I'm really particular about very high frame rates.
Of course the GF2 series is better still and worth the
extra money compared to the MX - in my opinion.

My CLAP GF256DDR is great, giving me excellent framerates at 1024x768@32bits in plenty of games including Quake 3. I wouldn't recommend anybody with any GF1 to upgrade to a GF2mx. A GTS would be a much better upgrade.

I wouldn't recommend a MX400 upgrade because it will probably not be much if any of an upgrade. Upgrade to a GF3 or Radeon2 when the prices drop some. If you are playing your games without to much problems save your money or buy more games to have fun with.

Holygrenade, what kind of framerates are you getting with your Geforce256 DDR in Quake 3? I'm getting 57 fps with my Geforce SDR overclocked to 150/210. That's 1024x768x32 with all video options set to high in Quake's video setup.

My system

Duron 600 @ 1007mhz
Abit KT7
384 mb OCZ Enhanced memory, CAS2 at 141mhz
Maxtor DiamondMax VL40 hard drive
etc.
