Hi, this is my first post here so please go easy on me.

I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 4700 with a PCI-Express slot on the motherboard. After reading the review of the GeForce 6600 GT here and seeing the benchmarks, I decided that it would be the card for me.

I get it in today, install it, and boot up the computer. Before the computer could boot to Windows I get an error message:

I/O card parity interrupt at 1000:8A52 Type (S)Shut off NMI, (R)eboot, other keys to continue.

Hitting other keys did nothing, rebooting brought me back to the same message, so my only other choice was to hit S. That allowed Windows to load and I got the message that new hardware was found. I tried to install the driver and even though it said the driver was installed, when I rebooted, I got the same error message and there was no sign of a drivers, any Nvidia logos in my system tray or anything else. The drivers were not installed and now it wasn't even finding new hardware anymore.

To answer the most basic questions, I had the monitor cable plugged into the 6600 and I went into setup and made sure that it was not using the onboard video.

I called Dell and after being on the phone for an hour with this guy, he informs me that there is an incompatibility issue with this card. Of course he tells me that only the cards bought from Dell are guaranteed to work and that I should get one from them. He theb reads me some sort of memo detailing that there is a problem with the Geforce 6600 GT in particular and that they hope to have it resolved in the next BIOs update. When that will be is anyone's guess.

Then I called EVGA to see what their tech guys had to say and the guy I talked to knew nothing about an incompatibilty issue with this card and Dells pcs. He said the cards were fairly new so that a lot of info just isn't available yet. He suggested I come here and ask around to see if this issue is common knowledge and if anyone knew of a fix. So here I am.

My system spec are as follows:

P4 3.0 Gig processor
1 gig ram
Windows XP SP2

Any help or advice would be appreciated. I settled on this card because of the great review it got here and all the good word of mouth it had been getting. If this issue is unable to be solved in the near future, I want to return this card and buy one that will work.

Thanks!

The Dell guy was right... your videocard is incompatible with your Motherboard. This is probably a BIOS issue, and might be fixed in the future with a software BIOS update. Doesn't sound like they're guaranteeing that though.

Basically, return the card if you can, and find a different videocard... preferrably of a type that Dell offers, so you likely won't have a problem.

i.e. if Dell offers an X600 as an option with your system, then any X600 based card would also probably work. Shop around and find the best card you can get in your price range.

If you can't return the card, sit on it and wait for the next BIOS update and cross your fingers...

Good luck.
