Can anyone help me with this issue;

I am trying to assemble a simple and cheap desktop for my young daughter. My problem is that when I connect a DVD drive to the desktop, the monitor no longer turns on. If I remove the 7300 and use the onboard graphics, there is no problem. I am fine with using the onboard graphics but it is driving me crazy trying to figure out why the card does not work. If I disconnect the DVD drive and plug in the gpu, then the display comes back. I have tried with a different monitor but that was not the problem. There is power connection on the gpu which I connect, but the agp slot alone should almost be able to power this card. Anyone else have anything like this happen?

What is the brand of the power supply and are you using an adapter to connect power to the video card? Try to connect a different molex power dongle and see if that makes any difference.

It almost sounds like a power issue but even the cheapest psu should run that setup unless your psu is going faulty. Do you have another psu you can try?

I think I spoke too soon. I changed the psu and it worked briefly and now I am back to the same issue. I would find it hard to believe that a 422 Watt psu is not enough for this system to run a DVD and 7300 GT. Any more ideas I can try?

What psu did you try? You bought a new one? What brand, specs?


A decent 400 watt or above should have no issues with running that setup. If its not the psu then you need to recheck all of you wiring to make sure you have good connections.

You never said if you were using adapters to split off your psu to connect to the video card. I think thats a standard molex connector so it should just plug directly from the psu without an adapter.

So you are saying by unplugging the dvd drive, the system will boot when the video card is plugged in but it wont boot if they are both installed at the same time?

Try going into your BIOS and resetting the BIOS to default settings and then go back in and reconfigure your BIOS to your hardware. Set the BIOS ram settings for your video card to match the card as well.

Hi Englandr,

I had a third psu kicking around my house and I decided to give that one a try and it appears that it has worked! It is a 420 Watt psu and I haven't had an issue with it since I tried it. I was using a molex connector initially but removing that and connecting it directly was the first thing I tried with the initial psu. I am now using that connector to power the DVD and there doesn't seem to be any issue with it. Thanks for your thoughts on my problem. Guess I am just unlucky having two wonky psu's.

I guess I can't complain since most of my hardware is hand-me-down stuff I get from work and relatives with systems they no longer want.

I had a suspicion it was still the psu. It just sounded like a power source problem.

Glad you had 2 extra psu's lying around to try and yes it is good to be able to fix things with spare hardware that didn't cost anything.
