I'm looking to upgrade from my ATI Radeon 9600. I'm looking at the Geforce 7600 GS or GT card. (is GT available in AGP?). What are the pros and cons of PNY vs BFG or any other manufacturers? I'm not a really serious gamer and spend most of my time using flight sims. Thanks for any recommendations.

Not much difference between manufacturers (though eVGA offers step-up). The GT is a good card and will serve you will in flight sims. By the way, here's that AGP GT you wanted. Overpriced though, for a 7600GT. I'm sure someone else can recommend a better bang for the buck, but I'm too tired now.

Thanks for the reply. PNY is offering a 512MB version of the GS. How much of a difference is this over all the others that seem to be offering only 256MB?

IMO 512mb of RAM on that card with it's crippled 128mb interface is pretty pointless. The GT is more expensive, but much better than any GS.

7600GT is also 128bit with with higher clock. 160MHz faster GPU and the memory operates 600MHz DDR faster.

Get the 7600GT or if you can squeeze a bit more go for the 7900GT which is 256bit bus.

Don't bother with the GS 512MB as that card is nowhere near fast enough to use the 512MB of RAM.

My personal favourite was the Geforce FX5600 512mb version. A lot of my friends were raving about how cheap you can get a 512mb card. In reality my 128mb 6800 is many times faster and although today 128 is getting too small, I would still much rather have a 6800 with 128mb 256bit bus than the 5600 with 512mb SDRAM or something lame like that. A lot of people fell for it though.

Hi,

Either of the cards you have selected will be quite a step up from the 9600, I just changed out a 9800 to a 7600GS in my Son's system and it runs alot better, he mainly plays Warcraft etc but he is happy with it.

I used the Gigabyte one, it is Silent Pipe, no fan, but requires good air flow in the case to remain cool.

IMO 512Mb on the 7600GS would be pointless as 7600's should be running a 128bit memory and I don't think it would be fast enough to be able to use it properly.

I read somewhere about some manufacturers making the 7600GS with only a 64bit memory, the performance of such a card would be horrible.

I can only recommend you read the spec sheets on any card you look at very carefully before you choose one.

Good luck and Merry Christmas.
