Geforce 8800 gts.. can you beat it.. value vs performance??

I build affordable gaming PC's and have been using the Geforce 8800 GTS 512MB pretty consistently as the best second hand card for performance vs cost.

I have tested the card out on many titles, including the latest and the card performs very well.

In terms of FPS in my opinion, generally 30 FPS is a playable level.

These are some test results.

ASSASSINS CREED III 40 - 75 FPS NORMAL SETTINGS
CRYSIS II 55-75 FPS GAMER SETTINGS
HITMAN ABSOLUTION 40-75 FPS NORMAL SETTINGS
CALL OF DUTY - MODERN WARFARE-3 40+ FPS HIGH SETTINGS
MASS EFFECT 3 60 FPS DURING INTERACTIVE GAME PLAY. NORMAL SETTINGS.
GRAND THEFT AUTO - SAN ANDREAS 80 - 120 FPS HIGH SETTINGS
TEAM FORTRESS 2 (ONLINE) 70 - 220 FPS HIGH SETTINGS
AIR MECHANIC (ONLINE) 60 FPS - LOCKED** HIGH SETTINGS

**(WOULD DO MORE IF I COULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE FRAME LOCK..)


I am wondering if a second hand or new card exists which will beat the price vs performance of the Geforce 8800 GTS 512MB.

I have bought maybe eight of these cards and will pay between £20 - £30 depending on auctions, time of day or buy it now px's.

I can't find a better card than this in terms of price vs performance...

Anyone disagree?

I disagree because that card will not do DX11. for the games you mentioned it may still hold a minimum FPS but just try to play Crysis 3. you will not be able to because it requires a DX11 compatible card. A ATI Radeon HD 5770 will do DX11 and give better performance in the games you listed. They go cheap on auction sites to. As of now I personally recommend the AMD Radeon HD 7770 for budget cards as I saw them for sale at $89 (US dollars) new just the other day.

I have an 8800GTX that I've always liked but it's over 5 years old. I wouldn't even try it up against a modern game. If I wanted to game at that level I'd buy a console.

I have a 9800GTX+ Factory OCed in my second rig for my kids to play on and it hold up well, not great but well, to newer games but my 5770 totally out performs it. I have to lower the settings by one notch to play at a reasonable frame rate on Nvidia card though. The 8800 and 9800 series were great at the time but as we all know tech moves so quickly right now that as soon as you buy it is out of date and there is faster coming in a few short months later.

i would never recommend tech that old for even the smallest budget... you can build an APU based machine +6670 that will do more or less of the same...

and as stated, DX11 > DX 9/10

and you fail to mention what resolution your testing these games at.


my first real GPU was an 8800 GTX, i had it for ~3 years and then it was replaced with a 5770 (for DX10 and better heat/performance/cost)

The Radeon HD 5770 is $117.00 here as opposed to $45.00 for a second hand 8800 GTS...

Wouldn't the Crysis III game be backwards compatible with Direct X 10??

would be a bit limiting to bring out a new release that is only capable of being played exclusively with Direct x 11 cards..

I would say that the majority of desk tops in the desktop universe don't have direct x 11 cards...

Why bring a game a game out that can only be played by the minority and limit your market?..

Friend, I know exaclty what you are talking about, I have the same card. Actually is the 9800GT. It still plays games in their highest settings and I feell no need of upgrading it (I play at 720P). Altough it is true that the card is not DX11, not all games are DX11, and among the ones who are, I do not like them all. Most current games are kinda ports of console games wich are at best a 68000SLI and getting $500 GPU is nonsense.

I have always kept an eye on a DX11 cards cause I plan on upgrading soon...because...well I want to start playing the DX11 games. And moreover, a new generations of consoles is on the rise. Wii U doesnt count.

at the moment, I would recomend GTX 650 for $100. Then upgrade again in 3 years so you can get a card far superior to the next gen consoles

I bought a gtx285 off craigslist for 40 dollars and I used it for a long time. It still played alot of the new games really well, all though it was def starting to show its age lol

Gts 250 512 can be found for less than 50bucks on ebay,

just as info the Gts 250 is a rebadged 9800 which was a rebadge of the 8800 all of course got miner die upgrades between the badging. Newegg here in the U.S. has 5770's refurbished for $89.

as for DX11, Direct X is going like it did between DX8 and DX9 it is a progression.

to answer this question. No. Crysis 3 is DX11 only.

DX11 has been out for years now so not so much. Crytek made Crysis 3 to be like Crysis 1, to bring PC's to their knees, bragging rights yes my PC can play Crysis/Crysis 3 and major eye candy. yes limiting but also state of the art too.

Ahh but yet not all those systems are meant for gaming. There are many desktops out there but if your going to put money in to one with intention of gaming your going to get the latest tech able to play games. meaning at least have DX11 capable card or processor. There are many DX11 capable games but still have DX9 &10 support they wont disappear to fast but as of this point we can see where the company's intend to go. IMHO it is foolish not to have DX11 capable card if you have Windows Vista/7/8 if you intend on continuing to game.

because they did it with the intention that tech and the market will catch up to there design like they did with Crysis. Crytek developed their CryEngine 3 with this game in mind and to get the best quality they chose DX11 and didn't want to cripple the visuals by using DX9 & 10. The minority you refer to have or are now starting to realize that their systems are quite out of date.
