geforce 970 no display

Hi so I am a noob building my own computer. I have got my computer working wit the on board graphics of my mb to my monitor and tv. Windows is installed along with updates to it and the bios.

The problem: when I install my geforce 970 graphics card and attach my hdmi cable to my tv I cannot get a display. I am guessing it is a setting somewhere but don't know where to start. I cannot attach my gc to my monitro as I only have a vga cable not a dvi. Is there any way of me setting up my graphics card to work with my tv using the hdmi cable?

You have to have a connection from between the graphic card and the monitor if you want to use it.
Get an adapter.

Sorry I have an hdmi to tv. So are you saying I need to also connect up my monitor to be able to get a display to the tv?

I'm saying that if you need a dvi cable then go and buy one.

Ok specs:
mb: maximus hero vii
graphics: geforce 970
core:intel i7
os: win 7
ram: conisour2*8gb
Hard drive: crutial ssd 1tb
psu: an us 750w

Problem: I have managed to get a display using a dvi cable to my monitor. I still can't get a display to my tv. It recognises it and I can change its settings, but there is no display on the tv. All drivers, bios updates etc have been done.
any pointers would be really appreciated. I'm sure it must be a setting somewhere. I have also tried both extending my display and duplicating it.
