Hello all,

I am considering upgrading my graphics card on my HP ENVY 700-056 desktop PC and I have been researching some graphics cards and I wanted to make sure that they would actually work on the computer before committing to one. The one I am most strongly considering is this one:

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-745-oem/specifications

However, I am not familiar at all with replacing graphics cards and I wanted to benefit from the knowledge offered on this site. I'm not currently on my home PC (The HP ENVY) so I won't have access to the dxdiag until tonight but here is a general product description:

My biggest concern is if the two are compatible and, if not, did anyone have a recommendation for an upgrade? I know the power supply on the ENVY is 300 W and the graphics card i'm looking at has a minimum requirement of 300 W but I didn't know if multiple parts of the PC used this power supply which would mean that the ENVY would not have enough total power for the card. Right now, i'm running the integrated graphics which is not very powerful and causes some programs to run slower than I would like and I felt upgrading the graphics card would be a better choice than buying an entirely new PC. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Yeah should be fine, you system looks like a regular m-atx tower.

Out of interest, what programs are running slowly? It may not be the graphics card (or lack of) causing the performance issue.

Ha, I guess I should've looked up what OEM meant before posting. I haven't had a chance to remove the cover on my PC yet but I am safe to assume that the GTX 750 will be physically compatible as well?

The two main ones have been the newest Total War games, both Rome and Attila. I'm a big strategy fan which means most games run fine on the crappiest of machines (ie anything made by Paradox) but Total War has always been the main reason for me upgrading my PC.

Anything that is not graphics intensive runs beautifully however.

Ah ok, yeah a graphics card will help you with the total war games for sure.

Allright, thanks again, you've been very helpful. Hopefully, i'll have time to remove my PC case tonight so I can check out where it will be installed. If I have any installation questions i'll post again in this thread. Most of the guides i've seen make it seem fairly straightforward.

I read over the specs again and wanted to double-check something else with you. The 'Expansion Slots' section on the HP link I provided lists the following:

1 PCI Express x16 (Gen2.0)
3 PCI Express x1 (Gen2.0)
1 half-length mini card

The reason I bring this up is that the GTX 750 is listed as having a bus support of:

PCI Express 3.0

Does this mean that the GTX 750 won't work since it's 3.0 and my PC has 2.0 or am I reading this wrong?

yes it will work with pcie 2.0 they are backwards compatible

As shadows says, it will work fine. Physically a pci-e 2.0 and 3.0 slot is the same, the cards are also backwards compatible. There is no performance issue either, even the best graphics card will perform fine on a pci-e 2.0 x16 slot.
