GeForce2 MX problems (again)

OK, from reading some of the old threads, I've noticed that a lot of people have been complaining about various problems with thier GeForce2 MX's, but none of the posts fully answer my question, so here goes:

I'm getting random lockups when playing any sort of 3D games. I've tried everything I can think of to fix the problems. I've tried various driver revisions(offical ones, old ones, latest betas, etc etc) and those don't work (DirectX re-installed after each change). I know it's not a heat problem as I've got a blue orb on the thing. I've even tried flashing my mobo BIOS (asus K7V) and it still hasn't fixed it. I'm at my wit's end here, and starting to get royally pissed at this card. Can anybody give me any more advice on how to fix this thing, or should I just give up and go buy a Raedon?

My System:
Creative Annihilator2 MX w/ 32 Megs DDR
Win2k (sp1)
Athlon Classic 650
Asus K7V
256 megs PC133
Sound Blaster Live Value
Acer 50x CD-ROM
Yamaha 4x4x16 burner w/ Adaptec SCSI adapter card
13 GB Maxtor and 30 GB IBM drives
Intel 10/100 NIC

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
thanks,
Hammie

In your bios turn off AGP4x mode or disable. The KX-133 chipsets rarely was able to do AGP4x with most motherboards, the Asus was virtually the only motherboard that possibly could but still not all together reliably.

Thanks noko, but that didn't help. I tried it, and it locks up worse than ever. It would really piss me off it was just an incompatibility between the KX133 chipset and the GeForce...

Oh, I forgot a few things. Via chipset you don't say well you got your work cut out for you but you should be able to get it working. Try this link, it describes your problem pretty well, VIA AGP Chipset Driver Update

Windows 2000 too, make sure you are using VIA 429 4in1 drivers, this fix a number of issues with W2k and Via chipsets such as DMA/BusMastering/ATA100.

Your not done yet, you might need this update as well. Try the first two above and if you still have this problem them install this also: AGP Program May Hang When Using Page Size Extension on Athlon Processor

Let us know how these work.

I'm think I'm having the same problem with my hercules card. My system is somewhat older (asus p5a), but I upgraded everything and it should work fine.
Are there any similar fixes for win98?
I could really use them! :)

many thanks!

Well you have an ALI (Aladdin) 5 chipset in the p5a, best bet is to download the latest AGP driver from ALI 1.73 . Also download the AGP Utility 1.10 because when I used the P5AB mobo with a k63 400mhz that utility helped solve my ATI Rage Fury woes. It has many options in configuring the AGP bus and in optimizing the chipset speed in AGP transfers.

Thanks for trying noko, but a piece of advice to anyone who's thinking of trying that third thing (the registry edit)...DON'T! It caused my entire system to BSOD, and the only way I could fix it was a complete re-install of win2k. More and more headaches from this [-peep-] card...I'm going back to ATI next time. Their drivers suck, but at least the cards work

If all else fails install via drivers "4 n 1" in standard mode as opposed to "turbo" 9 times out of ten this will cure the problem.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Well in W2k the VIA 4in1 drivers don't have a standard mode unfortinately. Wow Hammie, I am running out of stuff to pull out of the hat. Here is something else that came to mind, if you have any cards in the slot next to the AGP slot remove and place in another pci slot. Are you using ACPI? Also in system information does it indicate any IRQ conflicts unless you are using ACPI? Any discrepancies in Device Manager? Another option is to remove all your cards except for the mx card to see if you can get a stable system. Finding what is causing the conflict or problem will lead you to the solution. The third option with LargePageMinimum above should not have done anything negative to your computer but obviously something went wrong. Reinstalling W2k from scratch is another possibility (I know, I've been there and it took alot not to take some revenge on a dumb card) but anyways I like your persistent and I hope you work and solve the problem. Possbibly the card is indeed bad, maybe you can borrow or trade out another mx card to see if that is it. Keep us inform and come on everybody with K7Vs help out.

I had the same issue when first playing 3d games.

Try upping you I/O voltage(NOT CORE..lol) to 3.5 A lot of newer mobo's are shipping with this as a default I/O voltage. 3.5 I/O volts is perfectly safe

Well, pulling out everything except my video card makes it work just fine, but if put back in the sound card, it locks. Same deal if I put everything but the sound card back in (NIC and SCSI adapter): lock-up within five minutes. There's no space conflict...both there are two empty PCI slots between the AGP slot and first installed PCI card. I'm wondering if it could be because they're all on IRQ 9?

hm, it doesn't seem to help.
I figured it out, though (I think)
my mobo doesn't support agp 2.0 and that is a req for the mx card, not?

Good, seems like we can rule out the MX card as the problem. Maybe the MX card doesn't support sharing an IRQ effectively on the K7V. So I am going to see if I can pull up a PDF file for your motherboard at ASUS and recommend some bios settings. This should be the easiest thing to try. Should be able to isolate the AGP and 1st pci slot to a fixed IRQ and leave ACPI turned on for the rest of your devices, which automatically assigns irq's when needed. The other option is to reconfigure W2k removing ACPI and have a typical assignment of IRQs for your devices. Get back with you latter.

I had a the same problem but it only happened when running anything involving open gl so after hours of desperate attempts I found out that uninstalling the agp vxd driver(viagart.vxd) would solve the problem for me so maybe for you too.
