Ok, stupid question time...

What sort of performance increase would I be looking at if I were to ditch my current Ti4600 and pick up the new FX 5700 Ultra (yes, I'm poor)? Enough of a difference to make buying the 5700 worthwhile? Thanks ahead of time.

EDIT: I suppose I should list my comp specs for reference. I'm basically just looking to increase the performance of my gaming. I looked to the video card first as, to we cluless ones, it seems to be the first place to look to upgrade. Any advice?

P4 2.4 gig
1 gig pc2100 RAM
GeForce4 Ti4600
Not sure what else is relevent...

You wouldn't see any difference, don't upgrade unless your card can't handle the games you're playing.

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800np @ 432/760 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Well, that's just it. Up until recently, my comp was running the games I was playing beautifully. However, a number of games have come out that I've started to play and I've really noticed a dive in performance when playing these games. I'm basically looking for a cheap upgrade to help things run a bit more smoothly - pixel shaders etc.. 200-250$ price range. I'm looking to the FX5700 Ultra because it fits within that budget and similarly priced ATI cards have been having issues in the games that I have been playing.

Currently like most people said here, I don't consider FX an option, simply because they're too weak in DX9. If you have a TI4600 and plan to buy a 5700ultra i would call that a downgrade rather than upgrade. 250 dollars is enough to get a 9800np and it's 1 of the best cards out there for anything.

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800np @ 432/760 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

here's some links in the US

Again, thanks very much for your help. What exactly is the difference between the 9800 non-pro and the 9800 pro? If price is any indication one might think that the 9800 pro is a faster card?? Is this true? I'm willing to shell out the extra 30$ for the Pro if it is indeed better..

Pro is clocked higher, meaning used better memory and higher voltage. So basically on the pro you can overclock higher. Most 9800np can be overclocked to the pro's frequency, but can't really achieve pro's overclock.

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800np @ 432/760 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Well I definitely don't know enough to even think about attempting to overclock anything. Looks like I'm going to go for either the 9800 like you suggested, or the 9800 Pro. I take it you are pretty satisfied with your 9800? :)

How am I looking in the RAM and CPU department? Do I need to worry about upgrading those anytime soon? Is my power supply sufficient? The one I have is a 340 watt. Again, thanks. I really appreciate your help.

2.6c w/ either P4P800-E, P4C800-E, AbitIC7-max3 all good boards

Ram - 3500, 3700, 4000 depending on what u want to OC to. Corsair, OCZ, Mushkin, Geil all good ram.

using that stuff will give u a great stable OC, up to about 3.5 if your a lucky ah heck like scottchen

2.4C @ 3.0G
Asus P4C800
Corsair 2x512 3200
Sapphire 9600pro @ 500/700
80G Seagate S-ATA150

Abit IS7 is a fine board, Asus P4P800 is also pretty nice, i still consider i865pe chipset an option because the 2 i just mentioned has PAT enabled like the i875 chipset. I would recommend a decent brand 400watt or more for power supply. Your CPU's fine, memory i would recommend something like PC4000, because then you could push to 250 even 260FSB then you'll be able to get your CPU up to a 3.0G, trust me this is completely safe. Also i sold my 9800np before i was really satisfied with it. All games 1600x1200 full aa, af, and max graphics, no lag. However Halo seems to be the exception because it's a messed up game.

Hmm, the motherboard I have now is a P4B533 (I got my comp a little over a year ago). So, again pardon my ignorance, is PC2100 the only type of RAM I can put in my particular motherboard? Thanks yet again!

2.4, what's the FSB on your processor?

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800np @ 432/760 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

FSB is 533. Like I said, it's a little over a year old.. I take it I am stuck with buying more PC2100 RAM unless I switch motherboards?

You can use PC2700 memory.

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800np @ 432/760 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Ok, one last thing. What would be a good upgrade for my sound card? I'm stuck atm with a miserable SB Live 5.1. I just want to make sure that my processor doesn't end up carrying some of the weight that my sound card can't as is the case with games like Asheron's Call 2. How would a base Audigy 2 fare? Thanks again!

SB Live 5.1 is still a very good card.

Audigy might get you 4 frames-per-second increase in some games. I don't think it's worth the cash personally, my Live still sounds very good.

------------------
Radeon 9500 (hardmodded to PRO, o/c to 322/322)
AMD AthlonXP 2400+ (o/c to 2600+ with 143 fsb)
3dMark03: 4055

Audigy 2 Plat from SB Live Plat got me about a 6% increase (3 fps) in framerates in AC2. Did a bit better in some other programs and may have done better in ac2 if I had a better vid card.

Shadus

I think I have some work to do... I just pulled a score of 1759 with my TI4600 in 3DMark03. Or is that typical?? Either way, I've got some upgrading to do. Thanks again for your help folks.

3Dmk03 does not show of DX8 cards well. Your score is typical.

If you want a better judge of your type of card, try 3Dmk01 and other more DX8 related benchmarks.
