I have mostly (recent) Linux systems. I have one (old) Windows system (ASRock 770iCafe; AMD Phenom II X4 945 3GHz; 8GB of RAM; Radeon HD 5450 and SSD).

I'm generally happy with the performance of the Windows system for my usage. I don't play games. Most of what I do is IO bound so the SSD made a huge impact when I added it. It is my primary email, web surfing and music streaming machine. I also do some development work on it (WSL mostly), fpga design work and cad work (pcb design, 3d printing design etc).

I just got a new 28" 4K@60hz monitor primarily for the Linux systems (all machines share a KVM switch).

a) The Windows system won't do 4k and I wouldn't mind more screen real estate.
b) The machine is getting a bit old in the tooth; the onboard USB2 USB connectors broke; I bought a replacement that I need to solder on but until I get around to it I added a 4 port USB 3.0 PCI-E card.

I don't really want to pour more money into it it by buying a new video card (unless I can get something that can do 4k@60 for sub $50).

I'm pondering a new limited build (mobo, cpu and ram - reuse everything else).

Initially I was looking at:
  • AMD 5600G; MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI; 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 -- $284.30
  • Intel Core i3-12100; Gigabyte B660M DS3H AX; 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 -- $304.96
Then, you know how it goes, I started looking at specs, hmmn, only 16MB L3 cache on the 5600G, only PCI-E 3.0, only DDR4

So then I started looking at the Intel Core i3 more, which led me look at next level up.

Intel Core i5-12400 2.5 GHz; MSI PRO Z690-A; 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) DDR5-4800 -- $461.45

I suspect the AMD is probably on the sweet spot of the curve, more than adequate and a major step up from my current.

But I'd welcome comments.
