There are many generic brands. Which particular brand are you referring to?

You can run into many problems with generic brands including: downgraded memory chips, counterfeit, poor workmanship, low quality PCB, compatibility issues, etc !

Best just to follow RichPLS suggestion and stick with major brand: Micron, Samsung, or Infineon chips.

Kingston is the top module manufacturer and they often use major brand chips.

Crucial is also very good because their modules are considered as Micron originals.

Make sure you are getting a module with major brand chips from a reputable manufacturer.

For gaming you can go with performance modules, but I never recommend performance memory for professional applications- only because I've seen too many issues with modules that deviate from the standards. It's a tricky subject.
