Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion Gaming laptop. It has a 144hz screen that feels pretty nice when playing. I have absolutely no external monitor for now, but as I repair a lot of stuff I am going to need one. As I am buying a monitor, I also want to use it for gaming, which is why I want to buy a 144hz monitor. The thing is, I want to be able to connect it to my laptop and get a 144hz output at a Full HD resolution. My laptop has HDMI and USB C. As I am running Windows 10, do you think a USB C to Displayport cable would get me that 144hz output, or even work at all? Or could I just use the HDMI output from my PC to either connect it to an HDMI input of a monitor, or use an HDMI to Displayport cable, to get 144hz?

Solution
You should check the HDMI revision on your laptop and a monitor that could do 144hz+ on HDMI. USBC and Thunderbolt 4 is the same interfaces but different on many things. if your usb c supports thunderbolt 4, then it could output a display.

does the usb c have display alt-mode?
what version is the hdmi?

I have found on the internet that the USB C port of my device wouldn't output any display, however I have HDMI 2.0, which supports 1080P 144hz. The only concern now is the 144hz monitor I will buy only supporting 144hz with its Displayport input. I have heard this could happen. So what if I use an HDMI to Displayport cable?

Please read the pinned thread, as it has the answers to the questions you are asking. Use the table of contents to find the parts you are looking for.

Ok sorry I didn't know about this. I did a lot of research and this is exactly what I came up with. It means that I need to use the displayport to be sure I will get the 144hz refresh rate. However, my laptop only has an HDMI output. It is HDMI 2.0, and the laptop screen is 144hz, so I see no reason why this HDMI couldn't output 144hz. I am going to do more reseach about that.
I am going to need an HDMI to Displayport adapter anyway. And one that can give me a 144hz refresh rate at 1080p. Where can I find a such adapter online?

As part of your research into the capabilities of HDMI, you may also wish to read sections 5 and 5.1, since it explains very clearly exactly the information you are looking for.

I found the adapter on Amazon. It seems to be capable of doing what I need, so I will order it tomorrow. According to the document, any displayport version is fine for 144hz 1080p, so I can use any displayport cable as long as it is decent quality.
