Get rid of changing sdd every 3 yr!!

as the ssd's have a limited write cycle will it really have any effect on installing a ssd more than required capacity (for system drive) to get some more of the write cycle(i.e doubling the capacity more than required should grant double the write cycle) as the extra space will remain unused untill it required (by expiring the other sectors of used ones)?
Will it work on mlc and tlc s ??

I came to know that ssds last longer but when under continues writing they eventually degrade.

It's all a question of quality - you buy cheap and replace sooner. A decent one will go for years longer and with no moving parts, will outlive any spinning disk by several years. Even the industry itself confesses HDDs to have a life expectancy of four years.

None of this takes away from my usual boring old mantra "backup, backup and backup again. Store one of them in a fireproof box. Sadly, SSDs will melt as quickly as HDDs in a house fire.

Thank you for that suggestion but ssds are too highly priced for using as backup solution and high capasity hdds are not that reliable the faliure graph in various sites already shows that so i decided to just keep my system running on ssd as its a desktop and used only for backup and not so often
So i decided to go with entry lvl ssd s but i may go with the solution i asked for.

I have 3 OCZ Agility 3's, all 6+ years old now, still in use and still going strong.
Unless you are doing some super heavy writes constantly i think it's safe to say an SSD will easily last you 3 years.
If you are doing heavy writes you should be looking at getting higher quality and better endurance SSDs anyway.

Thank-you for writing, i understand that going for a higher end device will have more to promise but i was looking into this matter from a different angle , when the speed is not a priority, so there is no meaning spending so much bucks on those top end models , and as you said those higher end models have higher endurance for write cycles but i am really concerned about something different for my different needs.

When I posted hard disks only should only be depended on for four years, that means four years of constant spinning at 7,200 rpm for eight hours a day or more.

As for backups, I'm using ten year old hard disks because they only get to spin for an hour every twenty one days.

You are vastly overestimating the amount of write cycles an average ssd drive will go through under everyday use & vastly underestimating its lifetime of write cycles.

Any ssd unless it becomes faulty will outlast a traditional platter drive by a huge amount.

An average mlc 240gb ssd will have a write cycle lifetime estimate of between 50-100tb - it doesn't sound much but ita a huge amount mate - my ocz is currently at 12.5tb of writes & its been absolutely hammered as a media & download drive.
Most people in the 4 years I've had that drive would be sitting between 2-4tb

The newish crucial mx 300 with 3d TLC nand is rated at 200tb+ worth of writes so if this scenario really is a worry to you (which it shouldnt be ) just grab one one of those & forget about it.

I know you are but I had to clarify my earlier comment. In summary, SSDs will go on for many years but don't through your HDDs out unless they've already died because they can still be useful storage.

Thank you again for those relience building words , it seems sum sites are really exaggerating the write cycle phenomena, as you said even using as a dnld drive its a huge limit to cross.

The issues were with the first edition old 2008-2009 20-60gb drives mate , its just not an issue nowadays at all.

Samsung estimate the lifetime of the flash on an 850 evo to be 46 years give or take for an average user .

I would generally keep 30gb free at all times on a 240gb drive (this makes the mx300 275gb an instant favourite with that extra 35gb space) & if possible set memory pagefiling to a secondary traditional drive if at all possible or have 16gb system ram & set vthe page file to a 1gb maximum.
That is one of the most sensible things you can do if only running 8gb ram because page filing is an always active process.
