Hello community. In my wisdom I tried to upgrade my Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro as I was fully sure that I had been running windows 8.1 Pro. So I use a generic windows 10 pro key to get windows to upgrade the eidtion, however when I went to activate it with my windows 8.1 key , boom invalid key.

Turns out I purchased a windows 8.1 home edition key, and I'm not 100% sure f it was an OEM key or not. Im currently creating a fresh windows 10 home installation USB key in the hope it will bring me back to windows 10 home.

Has anyone any suggestions please? I'd like my activated edition of Windows back..

Solution
the media creation tool from MS is how to get the iso file downloaded. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

download the 32 or 64 bit version depending on the CURRENT VERSION OF WINDOWS you are running. select "Create installation media for another PC" and then select home version and let it download the iso file for you. then mount the iso file while booted to your inactivated windows install and run the set-up.exe file. select either "save my programs and settings" or "wipe out everything" and it will install the home version of windows for you. since it has already been installed and activated it should auto activate after install. simply skip the pages where it asks for a key and let it finish.

note: when...
simply download the home edition and run the setup for it while booted to your pro install. it will do a fresh install over the pro edition in place. will give you all the normal options such as keeping programs and settings like you had before.

that's it :) all there is to it.

it sounds like he already had win 10 home running and tried to move to pro. so he is already authorized win 10 home on the pc. only needs to move back to home version to set it right.

i have done this before a few times. simply run the set-up while booted to windows and it will install the right version and remove the wrong one.

Apologies for the delay replying guys work has been crazy.
I really appreciate the helpful advice.
To clarify, I had bought a windows 8.1 home OEM key. Upgraded it to windows 10 home, thought I had a key entitlement for windows 10 pro because reasons.
Changed the edition to windowes 10 pro and have not been able to get it back to home since. I've been trying and trying so many times to reinstall home over the pro, microsoft website detects im running windows and doesnt seem to realise its the wrong edition for my system. Ive tried downloading the home ISO and installing but it wants a key which I dont have (tried my original OWM one and it doesn't agree with it..

Math Geek I will be forever in your depth if you could point me in the direction of the home edition setup / download link... I miss my activated home edition.

note: when selecting what version of windows to download, you can download the 64 bit version even if you are using the 32 bit media creator and vice versa. should be the anniversary edition now that you'll download so it should be up to date.

Thanks again math geek for the reply and your patience.
I've done everything as above and not have "windows home single language" on my PC. However I am still unable to activate it it says

"We can't activate Windows on this device because we can't connect to your organisations activation server. Make sure that you're connected to your oprganisations network and try agin. If you continue having problems with activation, contact your organistations support person. Error code 0x8007232B"

Am I outta luck at this point? 🙁

Wait, wait, I clicked trouble shoot, it looked around and "windows found a windows home key in this windows home single language installation, select "upgrade now" to change your edition of windows" ".... Perhaps not outta luck!

Thanks to your patience I now hold an activated windows installation. Thank you so much!!

Hi , I am facing the same problem and have tried what Mathgeek said. However as I downloaded the software from Microsoft, it did not allow me to choose the Home ver. or Pro ver. I was automatically directed to install only the Pro version.

Someone please help 🙁
