Hi!
I was wondering if there was any way to have a passworded account, but if I switch the computer on and go away for 10 minutes, I want to be able to come back and just login without having to go through the whole start up process? I only have one account, and its more for security.

Thanks!

What you want is what Windows does anyway, is the PC shutting off on you if you go away? It should just turn on the screensaver or turn off the monitor or lock the PC if you don't use it, not turn it off.

If you want to enter the password when the computer locks, you can set that in the screensaver options.

sorry, i wasnt very clear, I'll try and reword it.

So, the default option for windows on start up is go to the login screen. Then, when i type in the password it starts loading all the background apps etc, which takes a while. I was wondering if there is a way so that it still requires a password, but auto loads t background apps and desktop, so when i pop the password in, say 10 mins after pressing the power button, it just goes straight to an already loaded desktop, so I dont then have to wait around...

As an aside, I would use the hibernate feature if i could, but my computer just comes out of hibernation instantly, no idea why!

No you can't do that. When you logon it loads your profile settings, autorun programs, etc... which is what takes the time. Unless you setup the account to autologon (which is easy), you need to wait after you logon to your account.

Maybe disabling the mouse will help (Allow this device to wake up the comp). Or the processes in your system tray. Try exiting Skype, Messenger etc. as also your AV program and defrag utility and stuff like that. That'll work.

Basically you've gotta disable everything that works on a schedule with the box marking "Wake up Comp to perform task" checked.

sorry for bringing this post up again, but is is possible as i have my laptop set up to do this. what you need to do is set your password up, tell windows to log in straight away, skipping your password, and create a script for cmd that locks the computer. put this script into task scheduler and set it so it can run without a user, run when you log in, and give it high priority and privileges. once you done that, it will do exactly what you want, windows will start up, automatically load all startup apps, whilst at the same time will wait for your password. you can then come back in the 10 minutes and everything will be loaded.
